My immediate boss has 3 women and 5 men in his team. He has a colleague who runs a team that is 100% women (including the team leader). This is not at all unusual in the development centre where I work.
Perhaps the problem is that women have better things to do than waste their time on CodeProject?

It will need to be evolved into. Just like in Chemistry - so few female chem majors, even at the undergraduate level.
You can't hire what you can't find. And hiring just for the sake of some quota not only demeans the cause but does a disservice to the reputations of those who have earned their place.
And this applies across all boundaries of gender, race, religion or physical limitations. Despite the current popular opinion that we need to compensate for (real or perceived) past injustices, remember that every slot given to the less deserving is taken from someone. Not a demographic but a genuine feeling person.
Hiring for "old school ties" is a long-existent evil. So, too, is bigotry. The cure for both, if one does not want to continue the cycle via resentment, is to demand equal treatment for all.

I don't doubt that the field as a whole would progress if it was a bit more mixed.
Not sure what @code-witch has to do with it though, as he's just another dude* be it a bit... different**

Converted one who wanted to join the army for a career; and in four, five years she managed to sail past me. Didn't help her much either. There's a lot of untapped potential out there, because we "boring" (meaning, predictable and reliable as a source of income, plus job security).
Working in a stuffy office to achieve your Agile milestones is not going to tickle any girl.

I'm not a girl but I play one on TV.
In truth, I'm trans. But my gender is bees. Gender is just a prop I use to scare polite company.
While I'm not a woman, it would take a vivid imagination and a liberal way with words to ascribe the word "man" to me either, and it is a little weird being in a field dominated by men as something of an outsider to that, so on some level I can at least relate with women who are in the field in that respect, if nothing else.

Lurking ... I've been doing this for 35 years now and I can attest to the increase in the number of women. Still not enough given the societal demographics, but improving slooooowly.
