Since you're talking about survive a semester, I'm assuming you're attending a college or university instead of learning on your own.

Aren't they structuring your learning path and you have to follow what they've put together, and you're not free to pick and choose what you want to learn or not? Or are you claiming you have enough free time on your hands beyond what they're teaching so you can learn more on your own while still attending those courses? 'cuz that sure wasn't the case in my time...
