I know in perl, there is a library called LWP which causes your program to act like a web browser. It will go to the address you supply and gather the html which would normally be sent to the client's browers and saves it as a string. How is this done in ASP or ASP.NET?

I don't know anything about the extent of LWP, but to retrieve a page from the internet, look at System.Net.HttpWebRequest. I have not used it, so I don't know how well it works.

use socket programming with system.net,system.net.sockets
namespaces
and use tcpclient,tcplistener classes
u can get it at msdn

I created a simple web application with asp.net and access database to keep track of the phone call messages recieved in my company.
In the main page i have a dataset to display all records of the calls that have not been acknowledged yet, the page refreshes everyone 1 min to display any new records added.
I was wondering how to make my web application to know if a now record was added in the dataset and also how to make a visual alert like a popup message or a window to open up to inform you that a new record was added instead looking all the time at the page to see if a new record pops up.
Thanks in advance

It looks like you are trying to implement a "server-push" technology. This is possible, depending on your platform. As a linux guy myself, it is hard for me to say this, but IIS actually does a better job at it. Go to MSDN and look up "no parse header" (requires http 1.1). This is the connection type you will need to use if you want the server to push new data to the client without the client asking for it. Basically, the connection between the client and the server isn't broken, so the server can wipe the page and send a new one.
When a new record is added, you can have that trigger a push of new data to the client viewing the calls.
If, for whatever reason, you can't do a no-parse-header, you may want to look into using a java applet embedded in the page which talks to a servelet with no break in the communication (similar to a web cam).

I’ve have two users who are being prompted by the system to gain access to our website. The our website is using NT authentication only and validates their credentials programmatically, so there’s no prompting for user id/pwd. The only time I can think of when a prompt would occur is when the user is not on the network, is on another domain besides the current one, or the user’s password isn’t synching up properly. For the information I have been able to gather so far from these users, none of these are occurring (they have access to Email and other systems).
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Thanks for your inputs on my question in Website problems.
One thing I don’t understand with this problem. There are more than 1000 users to this web application. Only two users are having problem.
We have global XP image in all our users PC. So the internet explorer settings are same.
Out of those two users, one user types her userid and password, it takes her to the application. Even though the logon screen pops up, she can get in to the application by typing the user id and password.
For the other user, even if she types her user Id and password, it’s not allowing her to the application.
Still couldn’t figure out, why we are getting the “windows log on” screen pop up, even though we have global Image of XP.
Thanks for your input, please show some light on this problem.

Are you authenticating off of active directory? I would assume so with that many users. If so, do you have sub-domains with separate domain contollers? It might be a replication issue.
|
|
|
|
|
yeah. We do authenticate using Active Directory. Do we need to do anything in the users PC. WHy only two users, when others are having the same Image and access.

I don't think it is a problem with the client machines. I was just thinking that if you have multiple DCs, the one your root DC might not have updated login and password pairs from the user's DC.
Now that I think of it though, you wouldn't get both of those kinds of errors. Maybe one or the other, but not both. Besides, after a few minutes, the root DC should have the most updated info anyways. I'm stumped.

have you checked that the web application itself allows those users to access it, and have you checked the iis server concerned?
i am a linux/apache/php person, so i don't know much about iis... but that's what i would guess might be the problem.

Has anyone ever tried to code a piece of software to browse his bank(hsbc for instance) accounts, buy sell stock shares thru this software. This software is not meant to be only with ASP.NET, it can also be built using MFC or any other related libraries of .NET framework or previous Microsoft related libraries. I have got a similar piece of code in Java, however I would like to study its .NET version, what would it be like and what libraries of framework would be used, what methods be called to make a connection to the bank's server, browse accounts and buy and sell stock shares. I am trying to code a non-asp version of it for http://www.hsbc.com.tr/. Does anyone have any idea. I would later automatize my buying and selling thru some technical indicators..
Thank you for any opinions..

Hi,
Do you know the way to set the size of html drop down box in IE ?
The goal is to display the 12 month of the year at once in the drop-down box without the use of the vertical scroll.
Maybe I'll have to set up the registry.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Philippe.

size="12" in the select tag?
Have you looked at what attributes select has?

thank you for your answer but the size="12" «opens» the list and display all the lines : I wish to have only 1 item displayed at a time, and the 12 elements when the list is «opened» (the drop-down list).

I am looking for a program/plugin which can take as input an HTML stream contaning javascript, analyze or execute the javascript and provide me with the resultant HTML stream.
IT's URGENT.
thanx in advance.

Use IE.
No seriously. I'm assuming what you're after is an HTML dump of the document's DOM *after* any client-side javascript changes have taken effect. 'View Source' won't do that for you, but it's perfectly possible to write a tiny little scriplet that just dump's the document.body.innerHtml into another browser window.
Here's an example (save it as temp.htm or something, and look at it in your browser):
<html>
<body>
<p>Literal para 'in flow'</p>
<script language="javascript">
document.write("<p>para produced from document.write()</p>");
var node =document.createElement("p");
node.innerText ="para produced from DOM insert";
document.body.appendChild(node);
</script>
<a href="javascript:alert(document.body.innerHTML)">View DOM source</a>
<--This link above broken by codeproject renderer - put colon back-->
</body>
</html>

thanx piers7,
first of all, i am not very competent in javascript
I am kind of trying to write a proxy server....
but my problem is slightly different, u see, I am kind of in need of a javascript parser, something which can actually parse and execute the javascript and provide me with the HTML stream that resulted... After all why is IE javascript enabled?? It's because there is something in there which parses and executes the javascript.
take it like this, web pages may contain javascript in them, so there may be events related to javascript which take him to a new page etc.
thanx in advance
