F.lux[^], adjusts the contrast of the monitor depending on the time of day; also on Linux
--edit;
Doesn't fall exactly into the "Free tools for software development" category, does it?

Hi Eddy,
F.lux is a very neat program, and its system-tray-based ui is a great example of an appropriately "graphic" interface.
fyi: may not play nicely with the latest beta of nVidia graphic card drivers (which is probably nVidia's beta's problem).
best, Bill

If you do any form of work that requires creating graphics, there are some handy free utilities that you may want to consider. You could look at Paint.NET[^], the wonderfully named GIMP[^] and even an Illustrator type application called Inkscape[^].
|
|
|
|
|
I just came across Inkscape and was going to post about it until I searched and found your post. For anybody who searches this forum later, I should mention that Inkscape can do vector graphics well and there is an eBook available for the Nook (search "Inkscape"). It also works as an SVG viewer.

If you are doing any form of web development on the Windows stack, you need to look into using Fiddler[^].
|
|
|
|
|
That is my favorite third party tool.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

|
It is a mandatory tool for anyone ranging from web developer to system administrator.

No list of free Windows tools would be complete without giving a big shout out to the truly indispensable Sysinternals[^]. I can't begin to count the number of times these tools have helped me out, particularly the wonderful Process Explorer.

You've re-pasted the Kaxaml link

If I'm writing some XAML to answer a question and I don't need to add any code to demonstrate the WPF code, I normally hammer out the sample using Kaxaml[^].

- Please select the Answer icon(instead of Question icon) in your message while posting Tools-Solutions, I want to Vote for your messages but If I vote then (IMO) you will get only Enquirer points(instead of Authority points), BTW I know you forgot to change the icon because Question icon as default while creating new messages
- Please post Alternatives for OP's Answer[Tool] (If possible)
Thanks.

This is such an excellent tool for WPF development, it should be made availble with VS in my view:
http://snoopwpf.codeplex.com/[^]
You can see what your control objects are doing, their databindings and even change the databinding values so that you can see how the UI responds.
[Edit]
It also has one of the best icons IMO. We used to call it Poosniffer at my last place of work.

Very useful for trying out LINQ queries, allow you to connect to a datbase and create an on the fly LinqToSql queries. You can also include your Entity Framework libraries and query from those.

Excellent tool. One of the first things I install in each new .NET contract. There are ways of leveraging it within Visual Studio itself too.
