I've tried to like dark mode in various apps, I really have, but it always seems.... well... dark. I.e. Hard to see, lacking in clarity. I always want to turn the brightness up!

dark mode tends to help my dyslexia issues by keeping my eyes from picking up other words randomly on the page, it gets worse if I have to read out loud.
there's been a few studies out there saying the same thing, after reading the first one, I gave it a shot when VS started offering themes. It was a pretty good boost in my work, I haven't looked back since.
the gray text on gray background sucks and slows me down a bunch. It looks nice, but hard to read.

Reduces the blue light.
At night, when the blue is really dimmed down, the orange CodeProject ribbon looks pink!

I have been using flux since last 4-5 years. It helped me so much by reducing blue light. I have set it up based on sunset so when the it about to sunset, the flux changes the color to red.
If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much.

Been using f.lux for a decade maybe on Windows and a bit under that on Android.
Still prefer Dark mode on Android.

Dark mode for Windows, Light mode for Apps (generally). Switch to dark in some apps if they have the option (e.g. Kindle reader).

It is common now to see code samples on what looks like a command prompt type screen - typically with some color coding - but with a black background. Suspended in the middle of a white webpage background (usually).
Most of the time unreadable without considerable effort. Also, a surprising amount to the time I can't copy/paste as it's an image. So, although a subset of the general question, clearly dark mode is not very clear.

I use dark mode on my iPhone. Light mode on my PC and iPad. Different by device although I may try on PC to see what happens.

All that white light flashed in my eyes make them burn, my head ache and my vision blur.
I despise working with Word, I hated working with VS6 when I was forced to, and many other software with only white BG.
I enjoy light brown/light gray background with black text and all the wasted screen real estate must be gray or blue or anything that doesnt try to kill my eyes. Black would be good but most places have terrible lighting with ![Elephant | [mastadon]](https://codeproject.global.ssl.fastly.net/script/Forums/Images/elephant.gif) ing neons and it's even worse.

Even Word has dark mode now

I have particular Apps or Webs always in Dark Mode and the rest I trust in F.Lux to reduce the light and the eye strain at noon / night.
But there are days where I activate it on purpose.
What would mean, I would have selected a mix of answers 3, 4 and 6.

Same here, though I don't change it. f.lux and white mode, with GitHub and VS in dark mode.
