I was round my father-in-law's (ex army) house, he has just bought a new Windows 8 laptop, he wanted all his stuff moving from his old Windows Vista laptop.
"Have you got a data transfer cable" (the person who sold him the laptop told him this was the easiest way to transfer his data).
"No"
"I thought you were supposed to be some sort of hot shot computer whiz kid"
"I do software, that's hardware"
"You're a waste of good skin"
I transfer all his stuff across the wifi link.
"You're not a complete waste of space then. Bet you couldn't shoot a man in the head from 600 yards though".
I was also round my step-father-in-law's (buys and sells scaffold*) house yesterday.
"When I click on that button you gave me for my email it takes me here instead now so I have to do this"
I drag a new, correct, favourite icon onto the browser toolbar.
"Do you want to sit down, I'll get you a cup of tea whilst you sort it all out".
And so on.
I didn't go to my dad's house, but he wants me to sort something out with his printer. To be fair though, my dad does have more of an understanding of what I do as towards the end of his career he audited software (amongst other things) for the government. But generally speaking most people seem to think that is the sort of thing my family think I get up to at work.
*As in big metal poles, not old copies of Lily the Pink

Them: What does that mean
Me: Well I write the software that runs on computers
Them: Ooohhh, so you 'fix' computers?
Me: ...
Me (despondent): Fine, I fix computers

My dad knows our legacy software systems better than anyone currently employed. He made most of them.
He also knows our customers better than we do. He's been with a few for over 30 years.
My mom ran the financial department, but she made some regular fixes for customers too.
Yeah, it's safe to say my family knows what I do for a living

Not so long ago my parents had no clue about how to turn on a computer.
In those days it was pretty hard to explain so basically "I worked with computers", period.
Now they have a laptop and a tablet and it's much easier to explain.

Both of my parents passed away without ever having the slightest clue what I was paid for! It still saddens me when I hear others talk with pride about their children's work

Just because they didn't understand your work doesn't mean that they didn't have immense pride in what you do.

But when I meet people for the first time, I tell them I am "Music critic for Exchange & Mart"
This has two advantages: first, the conversation doesn't plummet immediately, and second I don't get asked to fix their computer...
And for the gullible ones, you can see how long you can keep them believing:

They just know I am a software developer (by position ) but don't know, what I actually do in my organization, they keep asking me, "How do you spent so many hours on a single chair and a computer ?"

Once my sister laptop failed to start, she shout on me, 'You are working in computer industry, I dont know anything...Just start my laptop' (wow, people think 'Developer' can do anything with computer now )
