My message is not to discourage authors, but to compare the results from this month and the month before. Last month, the most useless article won, and I find that way more discouraging. I want interesting articles on complex subjects get more attention, but way too often, the simpler the article, the more praise (in the form of votes, comments, winning competitions etc.) you get.

I'm not saying that simple articles shouldn't be written, but sometimes the competition just doesn't seem fair, especially if an article isn't merely trivial, but wrong and/or misleading on top of that.
