How about giving a weightage as below?
MVP's Voting 25%
Others Manual Voting 25%
Automatic Selection 25%
Judges Decision 25%
We can get the right one out!
IMO, just the % on Survey Results page is fine but showing the number of votes is not a good idea
1. Opens a way to play games
2. Some may go with what they see on top
3. Closes the option for other good articles to move up
4. It may restrict the judges at the end to make a fair decision

The monthly survey lists some of the best articles of the month. Some of which I might have seen but also lots which I missed. Having to vote manually I have to take a look at those articles first to build my opinion. If there was an automatically generated list I would probably not even notice them or I wouldn't feel the need to look at them all individually as I do now.
I believe a nomination for the article of the month survey is a huge oppurtunity also for topics which aren't targeting a wide audiance but in itself are an interesting read.

What he said. When the monthly competition comes up, I've never read half the articles: voting makes me stop and consider.

I would say the automatic selection to popup a list of candidates to the competition. Then manually voting which of them are really to get into the competition.
The manual vote could be done for a kind of comitee or by people with a minimum rep to avoid socket puppets.
The final contest of article of the month, open to all users as always.

I like the idea of automatic selection, thought it would be helpful to be shown a list of contenders towards the end of the competition. The reminder often leads me to articles I would have otherwise missed.

It might be worth adding a "Best Tip" in each class as well - there are some good tips out there which should perhaps be recognised.

I don't like this idea for many reasons:
* Articles that are updated very often usually got a lot more views than articles that are only published once and never corrected (maybe because they don't need corrections at all);
* Articles with many different downloads may get a lot more downloads simply because some people download all the files. That is, 1 file to download may get 1000 downloads. 5 files to download may get 3500 downloads (I am not considering everyone will get the 5 files).
Also, there is the problem that most popular doesn't mean best article... in fact, many bad articles become very popular and generate a lot of discussions simply because they have problems.

C++ article readers are more critical and tend to give vote of 4 more than other types of article while C# article readers tend to be more generous with their vote of 5.
Dun ask me why, this is what I observe.

In fact, I think that the Best Overall article should be removed... C++ articles seems to have less readers and so, less votes.

It would be nice if had a committee ( ) of Code Projects MVPs who would give their marks.
Their mark (median of or all their marks or something along those lines) should be combined with votes per category and ratings within given period.
