Files that are currently in use by the system or other processes that are running cannot be changed until either those processes are stopped during the current session or before the operating system is completly loaded the next time it reboots.
There are Win32 APIs that let you restart the machine, although sometimes you need to get a particular token to allow this to happen.

but why restart the *whole* computer? why not just shutdown the service that is the problem, do the installation, and then restart the service?

In my opinion, it might be the relationship between each services. As far as I know, the service in windows are integrate and depend on each other (very complicate). So it is better to restart the whole computer in order to made everything is fresh.

Hi, I have install windows xp, then I install linux red hat 9.0 on the same machine. Both operating system are working fine. But the problem is the time is not the same. If I change the time in windows to match my country time, then linux is difference for 3 or 4 hour. But if I change the time in linux to match my country time, then in windows is difference for 3 or 4 hour too. I don't know why this problem occure. Can anyone told me about this problem and the solution to solve this problem?

The problem here is due to timezones, and how different operating systems handle the system (motherboard) clock
Most modern OS's know about summer/winter time changes - but there are different approaches
1) Modify the system clock when the timezone changes
2) Keep the system clock on summer/winter, and just store a flag (so the OS adjusts the time itself every time it reads the clock, rather than changing the clock itself)
3) Keep the system clock on GMT (or some standard timezone) and work on an offset to the actual timezone
Each of these work perfectly fine on a standalone OS, but when you start having multiple OS's installed, they can each decide to do their own timezone fix (meaning when summer flips to winter, your clock suddenly changes two or more hours)
Usually it's fixable by changing the time settings on one or more of the OS's so that it doesn't attempt to automatically correct for timezone changes

The Linux internal clock runs in UTC, and the time is converted to local time zone for display to user. Windows internal clock runs in local time zone. If you have both systems on the same machine they disagree on how to use the motherboard clock that keeps time when the computer is switched off. You must tell Linux that the motherboard clock runs in local time, the exact way to do this depends on your distribution.

what distribution of linux are you using? it depends on your distro. i duel boot my desktop machine at home, and because windows and linux use the hardware clock (motherboard clock) in different manners, i set my hardware clock to local time. then i "told" linux that the hardware clock is set to local time. then it just sets its own internal clock to the hardware clock.
if you tell me which distribution you use, i may be able to help you set your linux clock to local time.

Hi,
I have a web server which I am running IIS from. To access external sites outside our work LAN, requests must go through an authenticated proxy server.
My problem is that in an ASP script on my web server, the MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP must POST data to an external https site. At the moment I presume it does not work because of the authenticated proxy it theoretically must go through first.
I have tested my script on another web server (one with direct access to external sites) and it works fine.
I have configured proxycfg.exe to use the proxy server, but I am not sure where to provide the credentials...on the web server somewhere, or part of the ASP script.
Any help would be appreciated.

You know that little click sound that IE makes when you click on a link? Well my computer makes that sound every once in a while for no apparent reason. Does anyone have any idea why?
I've done numerous spyware and virus scans, and no background applications are showing up in the task manager. So what could it be?

Try to check your keyboard to make sure that no key is dock while you press it. If it is not the keyboard then go to control panel, double click on Sound and Audio device icon. Check on the Sound tab and look for list of Program Event. You will see a list of sound that correspondence to an event that it will respond for your application. Try to check one by one for the sound that it has the same as one you hear and try to change it one by one to another sound and wait... If you meet the sound that you change then you will know why your computer play the sound and fix the problem.

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right forum for this question but I didn't see a networking stuff forum...
Is there an api/method for getting the signal strength of a wireless connection (802.11b/g) programatically. Windows XP is able to display the wireless signal strength when you bring up the status dialog of a wireless network connection, I would like to do something similar in my app.
This will probably be impossible in Win2k and below since third party applications managed the wireless connections, but in windows XP it should be possible.
Does anyone have any ideas?

It's probably the right forum, and the C++ forum wouldn't be wrong, either. But, though I was sure I could find the information you need in the SDK, it's missing. After 40 minutes of drilling down through the endless maze of contents and futile searches I finally found the section you need. Guess what I found?
"This section covers extensions to Windows Sockets 2 that are specific to the use of wireless networks. It also describes aspects of base Windows Sockets 2 functions that require special consideration or that may exhibit unique behavior when using such networks."
That's all there is; no links to anywhere (except a site to buy a copy of the SDK, which I already have, and feedback link, which I used rather bluntly), no additional pages, no API, no tips, no samples, no information. Period. Thanks a bunch, Microsoft...
This nonsense makes as much sense as the USAF paying a well known contractor $5000 a page for tech documents containing pages with exactly one sentence, to wit - "This Page Left Intentionally Blank." Oddly enough, that contractor is right down the road from Redmond. Coincidence?
I hope someone can provide you with some useful information; I'd be interested, too.

Here is what I have discovered up until now... (after scavanging many newsgroups)
This provides a way to access the information by hooking into the driver, I believe.. I haven't looked at it too carefully, but a number of sources point to this direction...

The other method is to use WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) to get the information about the adapter. I have no experience with WMI, but I believe this is the perferred way, especially since the first method maybe soon deprecated by microsoft because of potential security concerns...
Either way it doesn't look like it will be easy.

Hi, I have a problem with the computer at my work. I run windows update and update some component, at the same time an error message appear and ask for debug in visual studio .net 2003. But I ignore it and it require to restart. At the same time i just inform from Administration that there is a virus attack today. After I restart my computer when the I log on to windows its display an error message told me that "The procedure entry point AssocGetPercieveType could not be locate in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll". Then nothing appear on the screen except the picture of windows background (no taskbar, no any icon...). When I leave the computer for a while there is a shutdown dialog box appear and told me that the Remote Procedure Call need to shutdown... I suspect that it was a virus attack with my computer.
Now I could not di anything with my computer. The only solution that I have is create an emergency disk of anti-virus and scan it from the start up. All my importance file are in the computer and could not copy out to the other device. Does anybody have any idea to solve this problem??? Please help!!!  confused:     
Note: my computer is running windows xp pro. service pack 2. If any one know a virus name that cause this problem then let me know because some solution with the virus could be solve if I know the virus name.

I really wonder why I just last for restart only 5 minutes it made my windows operating system become corrupts its file??? I think it might be something wrong with my computer.
