All of the IMs I know of use ports other than 80 for communication. You have to enable those ports on the proxy server to allow them to work. Changing the programs to use port 80 won't help because the server end of the connection isn't listening to that port.

Hello all,
I have created a certificate using the makecert.exe utility (I do not have a certificate server available at this moment). The certificate was created and I moved the certificate to my C:\Intepub\wwwroot directory.
I then opened up the directory security tab in the web site properties dialog box. Then, I clicked on the Server Certificate button and the "Welcome to The web Server Certificate Wizard" opened. I clicked next--> selected radio button option "Assign an existing certificate" and clicked next. The IIS certificate wizard opened but there was no option to browse to where my certificate was located (in: C:\Intepub\wwwroot).
How do I install the certificate I created into IIS? I have looked all over msdn and the web to find some hint of how to do this, but could not find anything.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

I had to issue the following command:
makecert -r -n "CN=www.benningfield1.com" -b 01/01/2000 -e 01/01/2036 -eku 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 -sk ANewKey -ss my -sr localMachine -sky exchange -sp "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider" -sy 12
After that it the certificate wizard "saw" the newly created certificate.

You need to use Microsoft Management Console to import the certificate into "Computer" certificate storage (it's MY logical storage, Registry\HKLM "physical" storage). Then you can select the certificate from storage in IIS.

They really differ in use. Many operating systems come in several flavors because of this, e.g. Windows, Linux, etc.
A Desktop OS targets an end-user, and is [usually] optimized for Graphical Interfaces, Media, et al., while not needing robust features required or needed by Server OSs.
Server OSs are meant to be used by multiple users and as such are optimized for background processing, application/file sharing, print services, databases, internet and network services, fault tolerance, etc.
Network OSs are meant to be used by clients (such as a Terminal Server Client for Windows or VNC or an X-Windows client in the case of Unix.) Applications and ilk run on the Network OS across the wire, the client just sees a representation of it on their "terminal." The client is usually the only software running on the local machine when using a Network OS -- and may be a very stripped down OS whose sole purpose is to be a "terminal" to a Network OS.

I'm going to resolve my server problem by adding a new drive as C: and re-installing Win2K Server on it. I can then recover anything I need from the existing drives at my leisure, after I have a clean, stable server configured. The question is, since I'll be installing the new drive on IDE 0 as master, when I move one of the existing drives to IDE 1 (where the CD-RW currently resides alone) should it be master, or slave? If this was a simple CD-ROM drive, I'd make it a slave, but I'm concerned about problems writing CDs if the CD-RW drive is not the bus master. Any thoughts?

I don't think it would matter, I'm running my CD-RW slave to my DVD-RW and it works fine. I don't think the master/slave issue is really as pertinent as in the past which is why SATA doesn't have it.

i have a problem with my outlook express in windows xp. when i get new messages, the number of new message appear next to the inbox icon. but when i click the inbox icon to read the mail, there are no new mail in my inbox and number of the new message change to 1. it seem that there is something error in my computer. does any one know about this problem?

Is there any way to programatically restore a foreign application from the system tray? (the same as, in most cases, double clicking the tray icon)
All I have found are ways to maximize/minimize windows that are already running out of the tray...

Hey everyone,
Well I am fairly new to linux and I have been messing around with Red Hat. I have been looking for information on the web but just cant seem to find it. I am trying to access data on my windows XP partition while I am in Linux. I see online you are able to do this with FAT32 but not NTFS. Is there anyway to access my NTFS data from within Linux without recompiling the kernal? Thanks for all of your help!

As for the reason why this is made so difficult: specifics of VFAT and MSDOS are fairly well known to all. NTFS is less known because Microsoft is keeping this information a bit secret  .
Oh, make sure you download the correct rpm for your distro, maybe you have redhat 8 instead of 9 (link on first comment).

Is there an way to change the behaviour of 'maximize' function for application windows?
In the past with small screens of 14", it made sense that maximise would make the application window expand to fill the screen. However, with wide screens, especially with the wide screen format of laptops, I would like the maximise function to expand the vertical size but keep the existing horizontal width of the application window.
Some time ago I saw this functionality on Unix systems that used large screens and have since missed it with Windows. Now that I have a wide-screen laptop, I miss it even more. Without it I am constantly resizing windows and instead of using the 'maximise' shortcut. It is easier to use to the 'maximize' shortcut.

hi, when we start windows 2000 (pro, or server) we will place at the login dialog box. we have to press ctrl + alt + del to logon to windows. that dialog box has the picture of logo windows 2000. does anyone know who to change this logo? i want to use my family photo at that login dialog box instead of the microsoft logo.

I have a device that is that acts as Multiport Communications Port.
Windows XP does not remember the Multiport Communications Port. With Windows 2000, you will only have to go through the process of setting up the device as a Multiport Communications Port once. After that, you can take out the device and put it back in any time and it will remember to recognize the device as a Multiport Communications Port with the same settings. In Windows XP, you will have to install and setup the Multiport Communications Port every time you connect the device to the laptop. 
This also includes every time the machine boots up with the card connected.
Not only that, but Windows XP will also use a different COM port every time you install it because it thinks the previous COM port it was using is still in use.  You can manually change the COM port back to its previous value in the Multiport Communications Port Properties.
How to work around this? Anybody knows?

Can anyone help us with this? We're trying to install SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2003 Server. MSDN says we should be able to complete the install and then update to SP3. When we launch the installer and tell it that we know it's not supported but go ahead anyway, the installer goes away and never comes back. The process remains alive with no activity, but doesn't install or give any additional messages. We can't get an installer CD with SP3 already applied, of course, so we're unable to get the SQL Server installed.
Has anyone seen this? Solved it? Have some consoling words of wisdom?

Hi, i use to face this problem before. try to check the solution in microsoft knowledge base www.microsoft.com/support.
as far as i remember the article in knowledge base state that you need to install windows xp first and install sql server with its service pack. test it if it working properly then upgrade your windows xp to windows server 2003. then everything is working fine. try it and hope it work.

Thanks - we checked the MS KB's but it says we should be able to do the install on a fresh Win2003 server. We can't deinstall the server and install XP to try this - the server's already up and running.
We're faced with how to get SQL Server 2000 on a running Win 2003 Server.....

Since I've installed visio 2003 on my machine ( the tech guy did ), my system is behaving weird, mostly the language selector is acting up, there seems to be 2 of them, one that looks xp-ish, and the other one looks w2k-ish (!); and the "selector" does not show up when clicked on it to change language ( keyboard layout ).
On top of that , outlook misbehaving ...
Is it possible that it was a bad idea to mix'n'match Visio (from office 2003) and the current Office 2000 ?

If any one knows about install shield please help!
I am using Install shield developer 8 SP2 evaluation. I need to create setup such that it checks for the version of IE6, updates if necessary and reboot. After reboot the setup continues in the normal fashion. Then it checks for DotNet Framework 1.1 and MDAC 2.8, Install in necessary. If os is win 98/ME it should reboot before continuing in the same manner as above.

I have the following lines in my .js file.

WshShell.Run (exe3, 1, 1);
WshShell.Run (exe4, 1, 1);
So, for the 4 executables I invoke, the system executes them on 4 different shells I believe, because I see 4 different blank command prompt screens poping up.
My question is can I have all the executables, executed in a single command prompt screen. So I want to see a single command prompt window, how do I do this?

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the right board, so please excuse if not.
I want to have an application started on the ppc just when the ppc is docked to the cradle so just in time with activesync.
I googled a lot, searched and examined the registry but nothing helpful found 
Maybe someone here has the right idea?
The background is that I still need activesync to sync my mail, calendar, ... but I have another application which synchronizes database data.
Is that possible (and how)?
