In Display Properties, go to the Effects tab and check 'Smooth edges of screen fonts'. This only works at certain font sizes - typically above 12pt and below 6pt for most fonts. It's done by using grey pixels around the edges.
I usually turn this setting on because it looks nicer at larger sizes, IMO.

Hey everyone.
I'm starting to look at Windows 2003 for some things here in the office. One thing I tend to do is rebuild a set of servers often because users have a tendency to trash them (frone end data prcoessing engines). Right now, I just re-ghost the server back to a clean state and all is usually well. Has anyone tried using Ghost on Windows 2003 at all?

Hi all,
I'm a student and in this semester i have to Research on "Security In Operating Systems".
Could any one show me article(s) for this topic.? I want to know all different aspects of security that are necessary for a good operating system such as :
security in network services
security aspects of network-based servers
security in file system of operating system
security memeory management

and etc.

I would suggest Goggle as a starting point ... Stuff like security is constantly changing with new Operating systems and such .. You can always do a search on security in Google and probably get a mess of hits .

hi all, not sure if i'm posting this in the right discussion board. but getting every eager to finish off my project. my new you-beaut program is ready to roll except for one thing, the program on the USB drive must autorun once it is connected..
I've been doing a bit of research on making my USB drive to autorun. Based on what i've gathered, "the device must not be marked as a removable media device" - microsoft
would anybody know how to achieve this??
(i've considered writing a hook application to handle the autorun side of things. but i would consider this as the very last option)

Is it possible to install Win98 on a machine with only 8mb ram, because it complains when I try. I've heard that using the /im switch will allow me to do this, but it doesn't appear to work 
Upgrading is not exactly an option at this point...

/nm This switch bypasses the minimum hardware requirement test. This tests for a minimum of a 486/66DX central processing unit (CPU) and 16 megabytes (MB) of memory.
Unless your message was a typo I think it should be /nm
/im Causes setup to ignore the conventional memory check.

Great! I just managed to shoe-horn 98 onto this old laptop... Now I'm trying to get WLAN to work... The idea is that then I'll have a pc I can use in the house for surfing/email/chatting etc..

Hi All,
I am into webdevelopment with ASP, .NET and stuffs. I am running my PC with XP OS. Can I maintain the same ot shall I change to 2000 Adv Server?
The problem here is I cant run SQL server 2000 with full server option.
Please suggest me... to be or not to be with XP?? I have plans to go for the 2003 server later (after 6 months)

You can run the personal version of SQL or Developer version . If you want to run the Enterprise version you would need a server OS .. Which can be Windows 2000 Server MUCH cheaper than Advanced server .
You only would need Advanced Server if you were Clustering ...

If you only want to do development, you can get the SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition, which will install on a desktop.
You need a Server edition of Windows (Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server or Datacenter Server, or Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter Edition) to install a full version of SQL Server 2000, which you must do to comply with the license in a deployment scenario. You can also use Windows NT 4.0 Server but I wouldn't really recommend that at this stage.

I am trying to write an application that will act as a service on Windows 98. I found some sample code for writing service applications for Win2000/XP, but not for Win98. Does anyone have any information concerning this?

You would have to reproduce your service as a program that just ran with a tray icon or something like that because Win9x does not have the service framework NT based OSes have.

The TCP/IP stack in Win95 used to get thoroughly hosed periodically, and I often had to uninstall it then reinstall the protocol. On a few machines I even found it necessary to completely remove networking from the Windows setup and reinstall fresh. There was also a critical flaw in the network redirector dll, redir.dll IIRC, that was fixed by a download from Technet. You might try looking for that, though I doubt that you'll find anything that old on the site anymore.

OK, I'll try that. Just for clarity, how would I reinstall networking completely? I don't see it in the Windows Setup list (CPanel/Add Programs/Windows Setup).

I don't recall exactly what it was called back then, but there should be a line in the Add/Remove Programs/Windows Setup section that, when expanded, contains all the networking pieces - protocols, adapters, clients, etc - that you can unselect. Of course, if you don't have the original CD or floppy disks you're out of luck; it will demand the originals even to uninstall anything.
