As pkfox spotted, "Astronomers" is an anagram of "moon starers" - but more importantly, it's an APTAGRAM[^] as well.
"NOTES" and "TONES" are anagrams and synonyms, so they are also an aptagram.

A kipper is a smoked herring, preserved so you can keep a load in stock after a fishing trip. I think this was probably originally a "down" clue, hence the "rising" reversing the order.

Thanks!  I'll give them a listen. Texas seems to have a knack of churning out some fine song writers. Speaking of Mcmurtry, he has a gift for great lyrical prose in my humble opinion, a chip of the 'ol block if you will, definitely one of my favorite songwriters.
