Wow, I just stumbled upon the new edition of Charles Petzold's fantastic book Code: The Hidden Language Computer Hardware & Software, 2nd ed[^].
It's publication date is set as August 29, 2022 but it's already available on my O'Reilly Bookshelf and at amazon.
I'm really interested in seeing what updates Petzold made. The 1st ed. is an amazing must-read for all software / hardware people. It's so good.
Have you read the 1st (from 1999)?
From Preface to 2nd
The first edition of this book was published in September 1999. With much delight I realized that I had finally written a book that would never need revising! This was in stark contrast to my first book, which was about programming applications for Microsoft Windows. That one had already gone through five editions in just ten years.

Iβve just discovered (while reading preface) that he has created interactive βanimationsβ of all the digital logic circuits from the book and made them 100% free & available via browser at his new site for the book Code by Charles Petzold[^]
Those are really instructive now with the live interaction. So cool π

Update: glad to hear he's still around. His first addition was filled with so much commonsense it was breathtaking.

I have that, plus his "Annotated Turing".
If'n I recall correctly, Code is what prompted me to experiment with implementing relays and logic gates in C#.

It prompted me to build small circuits with little push buttons, LEDs & BJT transistors to see see digital logic in action.

Outstanding. I had tried several times to learn Windows programming but it wasn't until I got his first book that I finally got my head wrapped around it.

I never saw that Petzold book (I've seen a couple others). It looks like it covers the elementary stuff that any programming student was expected to know by heart 40+ years ago  , so I don't need the book for myself. But it looks like it will be an excellent text to give to some eager kid asking about how computers really work. In other words: I will get myself a copy of that book!
