Did they ever watch players on horses in Skyrim or on the Mako in Mass Effect? I saw horses standing on ledges on a single leg or holding on almost vertical climbs because it was the most direct route, despite being designed to be circumvented.

That's kind of unfair.
The article explicitly says "Basically everything new we do on the backend is written in Rust". It's a bit of a stretch to describe that as "rewrite everything."
