I won't be surprised if it turns out it's a bug that was never caught in QA. It's easy to think of a b_enableOperations set as false when ink is low and every component of the firmware checking it before going formward.
I corrected a slew of them in my firmware development stints.

It's suche a common bug, that I myself corrected, inserted and corrected again so many times I'm willing to bet on it. If QA doesn't do all the tests for every product it may easily happen, and low cost consumer electronics is not bound by standards like ISO26262. Also not attributing to malice whatever whatever.

In my aged experience, it's not age per se, but salary. I recently even had a recruiter yell at me for asking 'too much'. It became clear the client wanted high six five figures code monkeys.
Which brings up a second factor; they don't want someone criticizing their design, code or procedures with legitimate complaints.
Finally, some hiring managers believe you are going to try to take their job. It's psychological projection; they simply can't believe many, especially older, engineers have no desire to be in management (this situation is worse if the engineer ever was in management.)

Israeli state operators may have developed some viruses, but they have only been applied against other state-level organisations (e.g. stuxnet, reputed to have been developed by Israel and the U.S., was only applied against the Iranian nuclear program).
Israel, has a large high-tech sector, As such, it is too vulnerable to retaliation in kind for it to spread viruses in the way certain Eastern European and Eastern Asian countries are reputed to do.

Just when you started to hope that I have not seen this... 
That's nothing new. I have been playing with stuff like that since 1989. In fact, my first PC actually was my old Atari ST with an adapter board that held both the original MC68000 ans a 80386, plus some adapter logic. An FPGA is simpler to use, since it can be reconfigured at any time to actually become any processor and adapter logic, all in one package. You can also test drive your own processor design or a variant of a processor that was never manufactured.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.
