<sigh> I used to be excited about new Windows updates.

Nowadays I just wonder what they are going to barf up next.

It seems to me that aspects of the computer industry (which of course is several different industries, from mobile to desktop to software, etc.) should have reached maturity by now. That is to say, ongoing change should no longer be driving the industry (or industries). We should be looking at stability now, at long term predictability.

This is not something that many people want to hear. How will phone Apple make billions more if they are expected to stabilise their phone range, rather than bring out pointlessly new, and pointlessly more expensive, models all the time? How will the Microsoft Office business make yet more money if they can't bring out pointless new features? For example, I'm currently running O2019 but it offers me nothing of consequence or significance over and above O2007.

Yes, I know that businesses need to make money. Shiny and new is the obvious way to do that. But if we really had a mature industry, we would want fewer new and shinies, and more well-tested and predictable. Sadly this would encourage vendors to move even more to the subscription model than is currently the case in an effort to keep the income stream flowing. All the same, the entire industry should have grown up by now imvho, and the concept of LTS versions of software should be redundant. Everything should be LTS by now. Instead, we are mostly driving forward the mantra of obsolescence by design.

Does this mean I am getting old or that I am just grown up? Who knows.
