Two spaces is also what I learned in typing class. It's a hard habit to break, but I'm slowly getting there. When it matters, I try to remember to search for ". " before submitting. (Had to insert non-breaking spaces there!)

55 and I never really used a typewriter, so it was never a habit for me.
The one typing class I took (in high school) was a vain effort to help with my typing on the computer, so there's that.

Taught two spaces in junior high typing class. Many years later I typeset my own book and overcame the two spaces rule. The joy of proportional fonts!

Double space is how I was taught to type in school. I purposefully taught myself to use only one space since then though. In my opinion it looks better with computer text since we don't have the same issues that typewriters had.

I was taught to type in 8th grade (roughly 12-13 year olds). With real genuine typewriters.
TWO SPACES AFTER A PERIOD . . . . period!
This dropping down to one? Just another concession to texting where it's now too difficult to spell out real words, let alone use proper punctuation or spacing. Or has the world gone HTML even in real life?

I use two spaces. But I do them in a really small font so it only looks like one. Keeps everyone happy! 
[Note - I actually NEVER (intentionally) do the double-space thing. Literally, a waste of space and as so much ends up as HTML at some point completely, um, pointless.]

There's a widget I made - it randomly shows one of about 2700 "witty quotes". Before display, each quote is parsed and the spacing is fixed - which in particular includes that after a period there are a space and an & nbsp so that it looks presentable.

Waste of space? This was even more important when one used paper and an inked ribbon. Inside a text file, especially with storage space as cheap as it is, it is even less of a waste as readability is (supposed to be) important.
Single Space? A manifestation of the shortening attention span. Dumbing down know's no limits.

The statement about two spaces was a joke. (As clarified in my next line). I try and avoid bowing to peer pressure, so that definitely wouldn't be the reason. And as for readability, I don't find two spaces after a full stop more readable. Indeed, when I see it it interrupts my flow of reading, as I usually stop and ask myself "why the *&*$*#* did they put two spaces in there? I guess the time may come when my eyesight is too poor to spot a single full stop and the extra space will be a visual clue. I'm not there yet.

I don't think this has anything to do with age really but rather, how you learned to type.
My typing class in the 8th grade, was the last one to use a manual typewriter. double space was taught.

Nobody I know in India uses two spaces, regardless of age.

This has about caused a fight in my house hold on a few occasions. I cannot not type a double space after a period. Herself who is in communications and public relations just about has a cow once every 6 months or so when she sees some memo or something I have typed that has been distributed inside my company. I am trying but I am way past 40 and to be frank I don't care that much.
To err is human to really elephant it up you need a computer

I just set my MS-Word to enforce two spaces after the end of a sentence. Even with proportional fonts it makes reading easier.

While we don't technically follow a particular style guide (though I don't believe any style guide has two spaces after a period) for editing on CodeProject, I can't stop myself from removing the second space.

I am thinking of building a new desktop computer. I have built several before, so I am competent in that respect. I don't play computer games except for solitaire, So I don't need a "Gaming" computer.
I'm looking for recommendations on stuff like Motherboards, CPU, Ram, SSD drives, Optical disk drives, Cases, etc.
I want a minimum of 16GB of ram, and 2TB of SSD. Windows10 Pro OS. Yes, I am part of the Evil Empire, and have been for 45 years or so.
I expect to buy from Newegg or TigerDirect. Any preferences there.
Wear a mask. Think of it as charity to others.

Motherboards: Good idea. It's kinda difficult to wirewrap the CPU & RAM together and glue in a few support chips, so getting someone else to do it makes sense.
CPU & RAM: you are going to need them, yes.
SSD: I use SanDisk 1TB's, and have had no problems with them at all.
Optical drive: Why? Who the heck distributes via SneakerNet these days? What have you got on DVD / CD that actually matters, and should probably be archived (via ISO if necessary) or put online?
Cases: these do help the fans stay in the right place, so I say "yes, get one". Which one? Whatever has a PSU big enough to handle the CPU and graphics card.
Addons: A reasonable (but nowhere near top-of-the-range) graphics card is a good idea: teh drivers work well, and they do speed up Windows - without grabbing a big chunk out of your system RAM. Plus, they support multiple monitors, and that's worth it's weight in gold for development work!
