Unpaid work outside the agreed-upon hours? And people agree to that? 
Also never seen an emergency in workforce like that; things get called emergencies quickly, and they often exist due to poor planning. Deadlines that aren't realistic, because the salesperson cut it to get a contract, that kind of stuff. That's not an emergency, that's making a choice - and then shifting the burden to devs.
Or using code in production that isn't ready for production, where the customer is screaming fire; Well, apologize the next day and stop using pre-production code.
If I was a surgeon, yes, there'd be emergencies. Anything that is not life threathening can wait

At the Fish Shoppe(tm) there are some groups that seem to pride themselves on all being online and working late into the night, every night. Those that didn't got pressured out (team or company). I never understood that mentality.

They competing against their coworkers, using the "hard working" thing as virtue (as helpful as being a virgin is a virtue). If the PHB don't like you, you're out, they reason. My mother competes in a similar way, saying that the younger ones are preferred if she doesn't work harder. It's an unspoken bluff.
I'm not hired because I'm liked, but because I'm skilled. And those skills need downtime. Even if they didn't, it is not in my bloody contract, and often unpaid.
And if unpaid, it's a scam.

I almost wish they tried to make this mandatory instead of voluntary just for all the lulz that would come from blowing up the ability to function as a multi-national office or the use of offshore teams when you've got two groups with non-overlapping work days.

Oh blimey, I thought they meant 'proper' silence, i.e. a strategic delay in responding to a negotiation offer. Such a delay (that is to say an appreciable fraction of a minute, or longer, in face to face discussions or hours in online written discussions) can be very powerful but it can go either way: It can either make one's opponent uncomfortable and be willing to improve their position OR it can result in them assuming that you are no longer interested and just walking away. You have to know how and when to do it and it's not an easy skill.
But I see that they are referring to face to face discussions and the kind of 'delay' they are talking about is only "three to nine seconds". This is barely a delay at all. It's merely taking a breath. Don't we all do that anyway, even when aroused?
They say that "pausing for at least three seconds before speaking allows parties time to respond with more meaningful rebuttals and counter argument" which is entirely true. But it's a normal pause. It's not really strategic in the sense I've witnessed it.
They also say that "The study also punctures the notion that keeping mum is a power move meant to make your opponent uncomfortable." This is over-simplistic. A "three to nine seconds" delay is not going to do anything to put your opponent off his stride! If you are aiming to make your opponent uncomfortable then the delay in responding needs to be long enough to be noticeably abnormal. "Three to nine seconds" isn't it. And, as I say, doing it successfully is difficult and requires skill. You have to be willing to actually annoy your opponent.

Huh. Perhaps this is a problem for the newbies, but we *cough* more mature(*) *cough* developers often find a solution in refactoring that reduces the amount of code.
An example from earlier in the week:
I had several spots in my product that needed a common feature added. These spots were all explicitly coded, rather than being a single function with arguments, because they weren't complex enough to be worth the indirection. Adding the common feature changed that calculation. I replace around 200 lines of explicit code with calls to a 30 line function. This had the advantage that once I had the function working, it worked everywhere. I didn't have to test the common feature in several locations.
