to begin with, simple projects can be done with the online Arduino IDE. They also have an
offline version[^]. I don't imagine you will be doing anything complex to begin with, well at least I'm not a hardware guru so I take things slowly
I got an "Arduino" kit off ebay on the cheap, with a breadboard. It works, although it came without any description of the included sensors, but you can use google to figure things out through the identification numbers on various chips. Or buy one of the official UNO starter packs from the website
as for books, I have one, but it is merely an explanation of the sample projects included in Arduino IDE for people that don't know much about programming. So that wasn't much use for me. But I got one "electronics for dummies" book that explains the basics about circuits, if you need that kind of info

I am just making the jump into Arduino myself. I bought one of the Elegoo kits (Arduino clone), and it seems to come with plenty of documentation plus online resources.
I haven't seen any of the USB driver issues that get mentioned, but I am just starting, so I can't say it won't.
Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.

Or should we really be calling it a Distro like Linux does? It's grown far beyond the definition of what an OS is and does.

Windows started out way above what an OS is with all the pre-installed applications - it is the main reason of its success...
But in contrast with the Linux based distros it is only one, while the distros share a core (the actual OS) and add several layers of usability of different flavors, so they are many...

There are gazillions different flavors of Linux; so each flavor is a distro.|
There is only one version of Windows, yes I know there are some variants like Home, Pro, but it's not the same a Linux distros.

I see those as distros in a way. There's also Embedded which is highly customizable, Server and Windows X10 soon.

Actually it is indeed an OS. The reason is the enormous database of divers and hardware support that Windows provides.

In my opinion it goes far beyond what an OS should do and I would prefer that it butt out.

On Monday morning, 23rd March 2020, I was a few hours a head of Boris in declaring 'personal' lockdown. Commuting in to work on train and tube, didn't seem like a good idea. Neither did sitting in an office with 200 other people.
It's been a strange year. As someone who has never enjoyed WFH, it was a real struggle for the first 2-3 months - but it has become 'almost' normal.
And places like The Lounge definitely help. So, thank you Loungers.

I really like it: When it's "work time" you are there. When it's "home time" you are there already.
The cost and hassle of commuting: delayed or cancelled trains, traffic that doesn't move because some idiot did an even more stupid thing than usual and caused a 10Km tail back, the heat and smell of the Tube ...
I don't miss them one iota!

Yes, definitely don't miss the nearly two hours each way commute - and the £600 per month being handed over to train operator. Also, removing that commute has probably extended my working life - dunno if that is a good thing! It takes its toll and I'd targetted the end of 2020 as the time to put my feet up. Now, with 4 hours extra in my day, (and a lot less aches and pains), I'm happy to keep receiving the pay cheque.
