The ESP8266 is a cheap and efficient board for doing this type of thing.
I'm not sure how many cookies it makes to be happy, but so far it's not 27.

A lot of WIFI dongles for arduino are ESP8266s in serial<->wifi mode.
But yes, an ESP8266 would probably do this fine, and a lot cheaper.
And probably with the same code.
Take a look at NodeMCU devices.

Too late for now, but you can use Jeedom[^] for the PC side.

Using something like X11 or another home automation rig would just be more complicated than what I am doing. And expensive.

Not sure what you meant, but Jeedom is free and runs on pc. And can talk to your arduino using a plug-in that is already available.

When I looked it up it looked like home automation stuff.
Anyway, I don't need it. It's more complicated than what I am doing.
Free is not free when it requires more effort than what I've done.
EDIT: They sell hardware too, like I thought they would. The hardware is not free, of course. And there's no way I'm spending time implementing a 3rd party protocol just to work with their software which would then have to be installed just to monitor one item.
a single icon on a task tray in an unobtrusive app that needs no install is simpler to use than this.

Just trying to go fast isn't going to be impressive, if you really want to have fun you need to do more shenanigans with it by Demolition Drag Racing it because raw speed isn't as important there as mass and volume.

I've been rushing around like a loony trying to get things done today, and wondering where all the time has gone.
Then I realized. I hadn't changed the kitchn clock to GMT this morning, so I've actually got two hours left, rather than one ... 
Can we please stick summer time / daylight savings in the bin where it belongs and keep the same time all year, please? It always messes me up for a week switching in or out ...

I agree, Summer Time stopped being particularly useful long ago.

I agree - but let's keep the Summer Time hours - it's nice getting home in the not-dark.
FWIW, I have no trouble slipping between the time changes. But, for people who are old before their time, such as yourself, I would be willing to make that concession.
