I have Task Manager starting whenever I log into Windows. It used work just fine but now after some recent update it's not starting anymore.
Few thing I've checked so far
- The shortcut is properly placed in startup folder (shell:startup)
- The shortcut works when double clicked
- Task manager is correctly shown (and enabled) in Settings / Startup Apps
- Also Task Manager is shown as a startup application in Task Manager itself on the Start-up tab
I've tried both Run as administrator on and off. Also when started manually, no UAC warning is generated so that shouldn't interfere.
I've tried adding other programs like Notepad to the startup folder the exact same way and they work just fine so the problem is only with Task Manager.
Anyone else running into the same problem?

I just run it when I need it: CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
Task manager auto elevates, and that may be a problem with later versions as you can't run elevated apps from the startup folder for security reasons - it may be possible to get it to work via Task scheduler set to run at logon?

Thanks for the suggestion, finally got it working! It needed a bit tinkering, for example I needed to tick the "Run with highest privileges" and target for Windows 10. But now works like a charm.

One reason is troubles with my WiFi. Task manager nicely shows the throughput history when needed but it needs to be on to gather that.

I don't know but recently when I launch the task manager manually User Account control pops up. It didn't before. Not sure if that was an update or a security change by my company so that may be what is happening.
Can you launch it manually without User Account control popping up?

Can't find anything special. A few DCOM 10016 events but based on the timestamps they do not appear when logging into the system.

So if it is uac, the funny thing, I'll wonder along with you by saying that I get the windows disconnect hilarity and also add that my sad windows story includes docking a 64-bit drive out of a pre-10 installation on another computer in a USB dock, waiting for the Win-10 UAC to finish cataloging all the files that I don't have permission to access because I'm not THEE "Administrator" who owns them, and going back to that hook up several hours later only to find that the indexing (I assume its an indexing ...) has failed and the frankenstein-face-green-progress bar and it's window are no longer even open.
Suddenly I'm a boat person and I, like you, am learning to laugh.
(oooppps ... there's the window, it's finished indexing, and I have access to all of Administrators (both Dr. Tarr's and Dr. Feather's) files; it was hidden under some other less rib-tickling desktop stuff)

startup folder and Task Scheduler don't seem to like Task Manager much.
You can launch it with your own code, as in:
ProcessStartInfo psi = new ProcessStartInfo(@"C:\Windows\system32\taskmgr.exe");
psi.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
Process.Start(psi);
This approach gives a notification icon, and no taskbar button. Which is better than launch methods based on desktop shortcuts (which don't offer "Hidden"), as for the last 25+ years TaskManager consistently ignores its "Minimize on use" option at startup...
