If you work with people who aren't as smart as you:
a) You feel like a genuis every day
b) You're more likely to get promoted and/or take over the company
c) You're more likely to earn more than everyone else
d) You can get away with doing whatever you want coz nobody would have a clue what you did anyway
But then again if you're not clever enough to work this out... maybe you should hang out with smarter people after all.

I work with dumbos all the time.
a. I don't feel like a genius because it doesn't take a genius to plug an ethernet cable in all the way and hear it go "click". This was a real life "I have a networking problem" service call I made two weeks ago that was a 45 minute drive ONE WAY to a client, and 10 seconds to fix). Idiotsers.
b. I don't get promoted because I'm a consultant. Thankfully, because I wouldn't want to take over a company of dumbos.
c. Yes, I do earn more than everyone else.
d. Yes, a lot of times I get away with doing whatever I want.

I've worked with incompentent and very competent peers. I prefer to work with competent, driven (motivated), folks with a passion for learning and ... here's the key ... sharing. It takes everyone exploring and digging into new technologies or new uses of technologies to keep up. No one person can learn and/or retain it all. So, the best environment for me is where at least a few people are in your same ballpark, are motivated, and will communicate with you. If you have someone to bounce ideas off of, that is also competent, then life is good. If they are a brain child, but anal retentive, like sucks. If they are incompetent, but willing to exchange, you spend all your time trying to refute unworkable solutions.

I've worked in companies where the other programmers were from one of the three catagories.
Years ago, I worked for a company where everyone was about as smart, and I didn't really improve myself.
After that, I worked for a company where everyone was smarter that I, and I raised my game to their level.
Currently I work for a company where everyone is less smart. This time I'm trying not to reach their level, and it's very easy to impress everyone.

If, on a scale of smartness from 0 to 100, it takes to be a (say) 30 to know about CodeProject and you are on level (say) 70 an your co-worker is on level (say) 50  he would be still smart enough to know about CP but is less smart then you.

When the survey is closed, the real results deliver the following results:
a) People that voted to be around people smarter than theyself are very shy to say they are more intelligent than the others, so they are dumb.
b) People that voted to be equally intelligent than the others around there are very dumb to see the differences, so they are dumb.
c) People that always think they are the most intelligent in the room are very full of theyself to see reality, (the other colleages are laughing over him), so they are dumb.
Conclusion. Anyone that votes this survey is dumb.

An economic reason is a good reasong! I didn't think of that one.. 
But what if everyone depends on you and you fail to find a proper solution, wouldn't you be the one to be in trouble?

In both A) and C) you stand out. Likely you will be canned unless you are really liked by the boss.
In B) you are just one of the crowd. All things aside you are just as likely to go as anyone else.
In situation C) you have no opportunity to grow your knowledge because everyone around you is sucking yours up. In B) you never grow your knowledge because everyone is at the same level. In A) you have mentors that can teach you new things which allow you to broaden your career options.

You allways have more work than you could possibly do but I still do spend some time growing my knoledge by this using site and reading books. Currently I have been spending some time each day learning C#.
