Hi All,
The company I work for at the moment has decided to make the role I (and another) were doing redundant. Dang not unexpected but I on the quiet could see this coming and had lined up some interviews, one which sounded hopeful after the telephone interigation wanted to see me for a face to face put all interviews on hold. I have another telephone today. I was after some idea, is there a chance I could a solid offer purely from phone / Skype contact?

It's possible, but in times like these anything is possible - remember they are quite probably working from home ATM anuway, and reluctant to meet face-to-face!

Make sure you have the redundancy in writing before doing anything "drastic" - you may as well pocket as much dosh as possible for the hassle they have caused you!

Well I had the first interview / grilling with my Bosses Boss and told my role was being made redundant. Last time this happened I left in the Pub so long it was not funny, I made a promise to myself it wasn't going to happen again. Then Convid-19 happened and put a stop to the interview process (had a couple of good leads!) and then the axe gets dropped whilst in the midst of Convid-19

Hi,
I saw a talk by Martin Lewis the money guy on TV the other day and he has said that if a company tries to make you redundant or just tries to get rid of you over this virus just ask them to put you on furlough as it won't cost them anything and you will have a chance to find (or try to) something without worrying too much about money.
Might be worth a go?

Might be worth asking even if you don't think it'll get you anywhere, you might if they refuse be able to take to small claims.
Depends how good / loyal the company is to it's employees, from your previous posts they sound like a bunch of idiots, but anything is worth asking!

I should imagine there are a number of companies' share prices "down the pan" at present, but furlough is nothing to do with share price, it's all paid by the government, it wouldn't cost your employer a penny!
And if they won't furlough you then you are really better off out of it, the trouble is however if you are out of a job you'll struggle to find a new one whilst all of this mess is going on unless you get one in a "critical" sector or whatever they are calling it.

My family has relocated to our relatively remote cottage for the duration (my wife has an auto-immune disease and being away is a good thing).
So the daughter is doing her university courses, the wife is working online, I am reading CP and bang - the internet goes down. I get a text from a neighbour asking if mine is down too - so it appears to be the whole area. Much panic ensues as if life is ending...
It appears we really do need the machine that goes 'ping'...

Try E M Forster "The Machine Stops" 1909 (This was the story that first got me interested in Sci Fi)

E.M.Forster wrote this ‘Science Fiction story’ in 1909. Pre computer, pre- world wide web, pre-smart talking to itself technology.

Set sometime in the future (at the time of writing) human beings have gratefully done away with all the challenging, messy stuff of having to communicate with each other, and skilfully negotiate co-operation with another face to face human being, in real time and place.
Instead, each lives softly cocooned like a babe inside a personal pod, where all wants are regulated by sentient technology. Vashti, the central character is happy in her pod. Her son is a difficult and challenging embarrassment to her and their ‘meetings’ on screen do not go well. He also has disturbing things to say about The Machine, and appears to harbour dangerously subversive ideas about a better, earlier time, when people communicated directly with each other. And then………well, the title of the story shows where this will lead.

Current events in the world, and specifically the USA, remind me of this quote from Charles Dickens' "A Tale Of Two Cities".
These are the darkest times for the many thousands who suffer the effects of the virus, and the millions who suffer financially after they lost their income. Yet these events also brought out the best in so many individuals and companies who are racing to produce much needed medical equipment, and it also brought out the innovative spirit in many who are working on new and better tests, treatments and equipment. Sadly it also brought out the worst in some who exploit the misery and fear of others, for selfish personal gain:
