Whenever you take work someone else created and represent it as your own it is theft and fraud. You have stolen work you did not do and fraudulently represented it as your own. Anyone who does this has no ethics or honor and if I found out about it as a customer, I would immediately switch to another vendor. One I could trust.
What is the problem with giving credit to the author?

You should never steal other people works and pretend is your. If you want your company name, then write the software.
Read the license agreement and if from the license, it is not clear then ask to the author and if you cannot reach him, they don't modify that information.
