To a certain degree they are right. There is no reason to be stuck with a limited number of platters because want to stay within the current size. It will probably change the way that enclosures are designed, but more for server machines than personal machines. Already looking at computers that do not even have the space for a disk drive since expect users to use one of the compact SSD formats, or even on board. Laptops are getting thinner, which means less height for drives, desktops can now be driven by a computer the size of a cigarette case.

In the past, yes. But that's not the way they operate these days. In mobile, for example, they are now being criticised for delivering better products (or in some cases only products) for Android and iOS, rather than Windows Phone/Mobile. The cloud is becoming increasingly big and important to them and they need to interact with all potential consumers regardless of platform. It's economic realities.

Whilst not quite inevitable, this was always on the cards. That said, this is a smart move for both companies. Xamarin get closer integration with the Microsoft ecosystem, and Microsoft take a major step into cross platform development. A win-win outcome.

That’s an easy career improvement goal to give oneself, but “become a kick-ass programmer” is not a simple goal. For one thing, saying, “I want to get better” assumes that you recognize what “better” looks like. "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better"
