I believe that certificates can provide evidence that you at least understand the basics of a particular technology and have a good grounding in it. But they can't and shouldn't be seen as replacements for hard won experience from the trenches. They can be seen as a complement to experience, but never as a replacement.

If I read it right Helium does nothing else but makes it possible to recompile the old code to optimize it - I can't see a hint about actual changes to the original logic...So the machines are not raising after all...

IBM irRational did something similar to my employer a few years back. Short term the sales weasel scored a several year contract worth significantly more than the old one. Long term the stunt left a sufficiently bad taste in managements mouths that the end of that long term contract saw all of the major irRational tools sunsetted one after the next. It's possible the company still has a Rose license for a UML addict; but all three of what were semi-mass use tools (ClearCase, ClearQuest, ReqPro) are gone. And there was much rejoicing.

As Eric Lippert put it a few years ago when talking about the differences between strongly typed compiled languages and dynamically timed scripting languages is that the former give you a huge set of "unit tests" that are created by the language spec, are automatically updated every time you edit the code, and then are ran every time you click the compile button.

Exactly. And also mirrors my experience -- 50% or more of the coding time is writing tests / single stepping through the Ruby code, simply to make sure there isn't a type problem, a typo, or some other issue.

It's even worse if you're working on a short term project and glacial procurement means having to do with only sublime and printf debugging to do all the type/value/etc snooping that an IDE would make much easier.

I didn't realize eclipse spoke Ruby. Might have to try it if I ever get another project using it again. As much as I detest it, at least I do know more or less how to use it.
