Have you tried wrapping the non-XML-friendly chars in a CDATA section?

That might work, but then again if they are chars it might not and you will have to use a text encoder (.NET has plenty) to encode them to UTF8 or whatever your XML is set to. I think. Not my forte (encoding.)

I might try that latter, but now I have another issue. I am trying to eturn an ArryList of structures and am getitng told that I can't do that because the structure definition does not get included in the wsdl file.

I am no expert on this, but one thing comes to mind: Have you tried serialising out the ArrayList structure to XML and then returning that? Apologies if that is exactly what you are doing or if that is not what you need at all.

I have the horrible feeling that I have royally screwed myself.
It does not seem possible to create a transparent GIF in .NET, even though the methods are all there.

Both seem to indicate it cannot be done (the first one mentions a way, but then you can't use a Graphics object on it. Which is exactly what I need in the first place, doh.)
Anyone found a way? Anyone can tell me categorically that I am screwed?
I tried to save as PNG (PNG has alpha blending) but the background came out very strange indeed.

At least, this part I can explain why, the problem is not in .NET:

While yes IE does have a problem with PNGs it can be easily "solved" by saving your PNGs as 8bit and not 24 or 32bit. Not always ideal but in my case I saw it as the solution.
Now I just have to figure out how to convert a 32bit PNG made by .NET into a 8bit PNG, using .NET of course (someone said "But Paul, just use Paint Shop Pro to convert!", umm thanks but the graphics are being made on the fly and there is about 4000 of them.)
I can make a transparent PNG in .NET (opened the result in Fireworks and it was transparent, same with Mozilla) but this conversion stuff has me getting a headache.
Thanks for the link again, I had lost that one and was looking for it. The DIV DX filter trick is not ideal, but I may have to use it (thankfully the project only has to work on IE 5 and up)

Yes I can I looked into many ways for those web boxes. Even PNG has a problem rendering a touch too dark...or IE renders a touch to light.

Thanks leppie. I actually went straight to your web-boxes project to see how you had done the curves and transparency.
I have managed to make a 32bit transparent PNG in .NET, no problem there except of course the transparency does not show in IE. What one has to do is to convert that 32bit PNG to an 8bit PNG, then PNG transparency works in IE. So, guru, how do I do that damned conversion?

There are at least two ways. But this remains theory until practice shows it works.
The first way to achieve 32bit --> 8bit color reduction is to explicitely set an encoder attribute when you are saving your file. This code snippet[^] shows how to proceed. Of course, it is going to work if the built-in GDI+ PNG encoder directly supports paletted formats such as 8bpp.
The other way is to explicitely convert the current image into a palettized one. There is a GDI (not GDI+) function which does that job : it's CreateHalftonePalette. And it has to be used in conjunction with other functions to make sure it is applied on the image. More info in this code snippet[^]. (this sample uses GetHalftonePalette instead of CreateHalftonePalette, which might be enough to do the job, in fact).

I'm starting to see some job posting that look for experienced C# and other .net framework experience.
Maybe I'll send in my resume, just to see if knowing about C# and the .net framework is enough experience form them .

.NET is out since Feb 2002. The first beta was out 1 year before.
.NET is still in an evangelization phasis. 4/5 years are required before it becomes a massive standard. Besides that, I can see the point of using .NET for ASP.NET portals, but honestly I don't see the point with desktop apps : slow, memory hungry, limited in features since you end up doing interop for practically anything (like the Declare statement in VB), etc.

I got my first glimpse of .NET and VS.NET in July 2000 at the TechEd in Amsterdam. I think they sent the first useable .NET tools to me about September/October that year. I remember writing a few things in C# before the end of 2000.

I've been using C# off and on since the Summer of 2000. Of course, everything changed with each new beta release, but that's besides the point.
On a related note, I was looking for a job last year and the employer all but called me a liar when I listed my C#/.NET experience at around one year (so I'm modest). They said "how could you have that kind of experience when Microsoft just released the product last month (this was in 2002)". I explained about the beta period but I don't think they believed me.
I guess I should throw away all the code I wrote from 2000 to 2002 huh? Since C# didn't really exists before 2002 - right?

seems, that nobody can help me 
i have 3 main problems, i just cant solve, although they sound easy:
1. I cant change the icon of the addin button.(i always have the default button, a smiley)
(sounds like a easy problem,he? TRY IT!!!,change it to a custom icon!)
2. I cant assign a default shortcut, i tried the following but it didnt worked(it compiles, but it does not assign the key)

but i cant make this "MyAddins" Menue automatically by code!!

I will let you find out the details but very simply you use the XML classes in the .NET Framework. Load up your XML document and there is a property/method to assign a DTD/XSD to the XML file and then you can validate it.
Go through those classes. They have virtually everything you will need and all very self explanatory.

Dear experts,
Does anyone know how to get access to the text box control that is displayed underneath icons on the Windows desktop. I want to re-use this text box in my own application as it has the "growth" behaviour that I urgently need. I need a text box that will grow in height as more text is added to it.

Why don't you use the standard textbox and at every keypress check the size of the text using the MeasureText method and size the textbox appropriatly.
It works for me...

I've actually tried this approach. Maybe if I could go over my thinking:
(1) Handle the key press event
(2) Get the key value and check for special keys like delete, backspace, enter and take the appropriate action based on this (i.e. either add the normal char, delete a char etc..)
(3) Modify the Text value accordingly
(4) Indicate the event has been handled.
(5) Get the value of Text and use Graphics.MeasureString to compare to the width of the TextBox area (available through TextBox.Size).
(6) If the width of the string > width of the client area, then increment the height of the TextBox by the the FontHeight.
(7) Reposition the cursor within the textbox.
(8) Invalidate the control to repaint itself.
Is this the kind of approach? (i'm no expert). How do settings like WordWrap and the likes work into your TextBox solution? Finally, how to you handle the ability to get and set Text into your box especially if the Text has been modified to create the desired output.
Sorry for the abudance of questions but I've been working on this for a while and you are the only help I've had!
