Whether you're starting out and want to get a first taste of programming, looking to connect with other women in science and technology, or want to be inspired by the amazing work being done by women, check out these resources.

Women are under-represented within the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and CodeProject wants to do its part in turning that around. We love IT and programming here: technology pros are in demand, and it's often a lucrative, challenging and innovative field to work in. Plus, coding is fun!

In the discussion about why there aren't more women in programming everyone's dancing around the fact that women are different then men. In the 1960's programming was considered a woman's job (http://gender.stanford.edu/news/2011/researcher-reveals-how-%E2%80%9Ccomputer-geeks%E2%80%9D-replaced-%E2%80%9Ccomputergirls%E2%80%9D[^]). Speaking generally, women are planners. Like Grace Hopper said, “just like planning a dinner. You have to plan ahead and schedule everything so that it’s ready when you need it…. Women are ‘naturals’ at computer programming.” Men aren't planners; they're more spontaneous, "take the beach" type of people. When men entered the field the way programming and projects were done changed drastically. Working 24x7 became the norm. Staying late and pounding through buggy code became the norm. Shipping a poor quality product late became the norm. Not shipping anything at all because the project failed became the norm.
Quite frankly, how is that type of working environment attractive to anyone much less the busy woman who's on a tight schedule because of her job, her family and her personal life? If you want more women in the field, then drastic changes need to be made to project management, quality standards, and coding standards.
