Yes, at times it does work that way
Simply put the problem to hold if you have already spent more than a couple of hours fixing it... take a break, may be a long one, and it may get solved with a fresh and relaxed mind

I once looked into Bloatus in it's very early days when it still had the 123 macro format, now that gave me nightmares. I eventually refused the contract and moved on to Delphi!

It has happened many times that I've wake up in the middle of the night with a solution to a problem that's been puzzling me.

Why do you think they call it 'to sleep over a decision' when you need some time to think over something? The mind does a great deal of defragmenting and cleaning up while you are asleep. Dreaming is only a side effect of the work being done at that time.
