Your onsubmit handler is only called if the form is submitted by someone using a browser with Javascript enabled. That sounds like it should be most people, but I personally use the "NoScript" addon for Firefox when I visit websites that I don't know or trust very well, and I suspect a lot of other people do the same.

Apart from people without Javascript, you could also be seeing empty form submissions from search engine crawlers. If a crawler follows your form link to "herewego.php", it won't fill in the form to get there.

So, to be certain that you are receiving data from the form correctly you should validate the form data on the server side. Javascript validation can be more user-friendly, but it is quite easy to bypass. Validating first in Javascript and then again in your PHP is the safest option.
