Of all the places I have been to interviews at, I have yet to see this cubicle environment. Denmark is mostly (for what I have seen) open spaces and desks all around. Management get seperated rooms with door to close when that is appropiate.

Like most Germans, we have small offices, which hold two people. You get solitary confinement if you are project leader. In our department the doors are always open, and the walls are thin anyway, so you can call to the guy next door. The corridor is fairly quiet, and there is a coffee area at the end where people congregate.
We got new furniture, which was joined in an island when it arrived, but my neighbour and his mate took it apart and reassembled it so it is the right height for both of us. We don't have eye contact because of the monitors. Once I had a room neighbour who liked to chat all day, and in the end I turned my desk round and faced the wall. I said it was so I could see the diagrams I had pinned on the wall.
We are on the south side, so we get too much sun, and a view over the big barrack where they do hardware. On a clear day we can see Alps over the top. We get spectacular sunrises in winter. Before I was on the north side, where you get top watch the main road and the car park. If there is an exhibition up the road we get to watch a big traffic jam. It was actually exciting once, when they towed away everyone who had parked in the access roads.

but I also work on site (client's office), coffee shops, park, and when it is hot, the beach (no office can beat that).
A laptop, a 3G WiFi router, and good 3G network coverage are enough for much of my work. When I need more hardware muscle than my laptop provides, I start a ssh to my workstation at home. I still miss my workstation's large monitors though.

Sometimes I split my personality into two so I can pair program by myself. Usually we just end-up arguing about the number of episodes in the original Star Trek.

... and (somewhat surprisingly) I had the best experience with open space (we called it "open lab"). Now I have a separate office which has good sides (can listen to music without headphones) but it is harder to communicate and much less fun.
Cubicles are the worst of both worlds, IMHO.

we can say office environments really increase / decrease the Productivity.
we have Open cubicals env. really joyful.
Chat with our guys easily. can share jokes / problems.
with the special cabins it is not possibel.

I've seen open plan office where silence rules, and cubicle farms where everyone is working together in and out of each others cubicles.
The key to productivity is a psycological environment that encourages open communication. In that light cubicles just give more space for wall decoration.

If anything they decrease my productivity. I work best at 1:00AM when its quiet, nothing is on TV and no one is around to disturb me.
At work I close my office door most of the time to reduce the noise in the hall and to avoid the distraction of the bright light they have right outside my door.

Three of us (used to be four) programmers in a private area (with a door which can be, but rarely is, closed). We each have our own desks. Only one problem is we're all facing roughly the same direction, which means I can look over someone's shoulder, and the guy behind me can keep an eye on both of us. We do have a big triple window, allowing a stunning panoramic side-view into the server room.
It's quiet (except one guy is always loud when on the phone) - and I tend to krepitate* when I eat a lot of Humus. Person three wears ear-buds to listens to music and pretends he can't hear what's going on. Outside our door are the systems/server mob, and the director.
All seriousness aside, it's good to have company when . . . at least when no one's mad at anyone.

The words 'private' and 'cubicle' don't go together, in my mind  . Maybe the term should be 'sole occupant cubicle'. The word private implies at least some insulation from your surroundings, and 60 inch tall cloth-covered walls ain't it.
BTW: I interpreted 'open cubes' as referring to cube farms using those nominal, 30 inch walls separating individual desks.
I use a pair of these[^] to shut out the never-ceasing drone of conversations, annoying cell phone ring tones, and general bedlam that surrounds my 'private cubicle', which sits in the center of a farm of about 60.

I also operate in such area. Several people can see what you're doing... Of course, I don't look porn at work, but I don't like being watched.
