That's probably directed at people that use the Intel Compiler... or those that develop .NET software but use other tools than Visual Studio to do it... or one of the many other ways to develop Windows software without using Microsoft tools directly. They're still using Microsoft technologies, but without the tools. That's my guess anyway.

for us. The value is superb, the support great and it is not like we are settling for half assed tools. VS (6 or 7) is pretty darned good.
The only area MS are very weak in is graphic design tools, in which case Adobe or Macromedia are the ones we choose.

The MSDN pack lacks a decent reporting/print package. I find myself having to rely on Crystal Reports which is not the best designed tool in the world.
I agree about the graphic design too. Maybe Microsoft should invest some more money in the VS.NET IDE graphic designer, either that or make it easier to plug in 3rd party designers into the resource editor.

True. But being in web-development all reporting requirements have to be met with custom HTML/ASP solutions

I was thinking more along the lines of a tool that "real" graphic designers need. Something like Photoshop or Fireworks but from MS. Odd icons and touch ups are fine for us developers but heaven forbid us actually designing a web site 
Also designers are very entrenched in their pet tools, Photoshop especially. To them MS is this company that makes developer tools, which is heathen spawn to them.

I adore MSDN library, but not the newest ones, they are slow to search and jumbled with the new informations about .NET. Borland Builder tools are fast and good to design GUIs, with lack of speed optimization of course.

But I prefer VC 6 and 7 for C++

Try the NetBeans IDE for Java. It is far better than JBuilder IDE (of course if you did not pay thousands of $$$ for the enterprise edition of JBuilder :P)

Moving to a new PC the first thing to install is proper file manager[^] because Windows Explorer just doesn't cut it for the developer needs.

I've never really had a problem with it, but perhaps my DOS background has influenced the way I work.

The list would be a long one actually, but let me just present few simple issues:
1. Try to create folder or file starting with a dot using explorer. like .cvsignore for example.
2. Try to see the contents of your "...\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files" folder. Now compare what you see with the real contents using the command line. Chances are that you have a lot of files that Explorer doesn't show.
3. Try to move some folder in which one of the files is held locked by some application (like VC++ project that is open in the IDE and thus holding the .ncb file). While moving it will report error and leave you with the half-moved folder instead of reporting it locked and give you the change to unlock the file or something.
Anyhow, I am not saying that there are problems with Explorer, it's simply that development often requires to have more control other files than the average user.

 I HATE THAT (especially when you are replacing the destination folder, then you have to check the dates to see which ones got moved...)

I think this is a basic by-design issue, I read somewhere that MS has plans to support a finer level of control over how things happen, something like an ignore error option while moving files. This will happen in the next major upgrade of OS.

Windows Commander - now Total Commander - is _really_ cool!!
The explorer is the app I hate most - it destroys every day time of many user juggling around until they have navigated to the right directory - copying, moving and other operations between source and destination directories are user unfriendly and _just_ bad .
Beneath the already mentioned features I find useful
- 2 key or 2 mouse click navigation to predefined directories
- colorized filenames by filetyp!! I discovered today
- multi-rename tool!! very flexible
- file packing for multiple formats is a breeze
- plugin extensibilty and currently masses of plugins for cool usages
- flexible user definable button bar
Yesterday in our company someone tried to copy 60GB with explorer ... a bad bug occured ... after progress reaches the end copying began again and loops ... and loops   explorer timebandit greets you!
Copying with Total Commander ... no problems .. as expected

Sorry but I hate that app.
I came across a lot of junior developers who thought it was the bees knees and yet it took them just as long to do what they wned with that app than I did with Explorer.
If a file is locked - its locked for a reason and not some MS whim.
Stupidity dies.

NOOOOOO, Windows Explorer is the best program ever 
I really mean it. It is very simple to use. I tried Windows Commander some time ago and it is too complicated or too much for daily use. All i do is delete some files, move them, cut them and paste them. What else do I need? Well, for packaging: I have Winzip.
for FTP: I have FTPVoyager
for Renaming (need it occasionally): I have a great free renamer - RenameIt.
I never felt like I should integrate all of these into one utility. In fact, I am against that
All I am trying to say is that Windows Explorer is very fast and with these other programs, I can do all I want much faster than that Windows Commander thing
PS: Locked files - AGGGHHHH. Damnit. I also hate that. Especially in WinXP. In XP, it tries to do it for 4-5 seconds even if the file is locked. Thus it freezes explorer for 4-5 secs!!!
