Videos should only be used if they explicitly add value over other forms of content.
Some examples of videos that don't add value:
- Video format sideshows of pictures set to background music. - No no no, this is stupid, just post the pics and let people browse them at their own rate.
- Video format presentations - No, it doesn't add any value over a text article, and reduces accessibility. Perhaps acceptable if it complements a text article, but the text must be the primary/default content.
Examples of videos that do add value:
- Live band gigs
- Entertainment shows, tv, etc.
- News coverage of events where it is good to see the event. - Should always be accompanied by textual content
- Visual content that is required to demonstrate something - Such as a brief demo video that accompanies an article.

As you can see from the other answers, pr0n videos are on of the best arguments for videos in websites... 
I must admit that I would also say, that no pr0n vids on the internet would be very boring

Videos will be fine if they locate in Separate Pages like videos.htm, trainingvideos.htm. Some sites containing videos in home page which makes the site loading slow on first time.

I often open up a site like digg.com and open up multiple articles to read, then go through and read them. I do not care for sites that auto start a video or slide show before I am even on the tab. The content doesn't bother me, its the starting without me!

I use Flash Block[^] Firefox add-on. It replaces flash content with a button and doesn't play it until you click on that button.

Hell, yeah, lots of superfluous data, same fixed speed for everyone, seek and repeat interfaces suck. Now call me a luddite.
A good article is about distilling the important part. Only the really good videos succeed at that - but then, they are a pretty pointless media. And don't get me started on the bad ones[^]..
As much as I enjoy watching Tess Ferrandez talk about fixing bugs, it's not what I'd do to learn about fixing bugs.

It really depends. A site such as YuTube obviously needs video as main content. Channel9, on the other hand is completely pointless - I want to read technical information, not watch someone talking about it.

The gripe I have with videos, besides the bandwidth hogging, is that they take an excessive commitment to the content. Commitment I very often don't want to give - so the tab is closed and I move on.
Being of a generation that can still read and comprehend (with a substantial attention span), I'd like to do just that.
When referring to internet content, I think it is a rare occasion that using video (instead of text) is other than actually rude, for it's rare, indeed when anything substantial is added by the typical (over) use of this medium - except, perhaps, for a substantial waste of time.
All of the above, by the way, isn't even referring to the atrocity of video-ads.
