Inthe Tools menu of Visual Studio you will find an option call "Upgrade Visual Basic 6 code...". Never used, but should be a good place to start.

Never tried the options others mentioned. But make one thing sure, any tool will not give you a 100% correct code. Not just syntactically but performancewise as well. Also the ways of doing things in VB6 and then in VB.Net has changed. So you will definitely need to inspect code manually.

Hello all,
I'm currently writing a Windows Form app, from scratch (VB & SQL2005). It's a client/server job and I want to add some reporting that will query information on my SQLServer 2005 database.
What I want is for users to be able to individually or batch print picking lists, despatch notes etc, but I don't want to have to shove a reportviewer onto the windows form to achieve it (which is what I am currently doing as a halfway house).
I want a user to both be able to click a button on a form to print an individual document for that job, or select a menu option to do a batch print off of all jobs that haven't been picked.
In VFP (my 'native' language you might say) I would simply author a set of reports then in my code select out my data for the report I wanted to run and then DO the report. This would send the report to preview or direct to the printer. The reports are compiled into the EXE, so no need to bother with paths etc.
Is it possible to build reports into your project so that I don't have to Load() them with a file path...I would rather DIM them and then send to print...
Again I'm not sure if what I ask is actually do-able...can anyone suggest the best method to use?

Hmm I no longer do much reporting but Iwould do the batch process on another thread from the main one. Not sure how the viewer form reachs to being hiddden when processing but it's something to try.
We use Reporting Services and manually launch subscriptions from the client, the server processes and logs the results. Same report can be launched by the UI for individual printing.

I messed around with this and found that I could add a Crystal Report to my project.
Then in code, all I needed to do was: -
Dim oCrystalReport As NameofMyReport
Then I could issue a
NameofMyReport.PrintToPrinter(1, False, 0, 0)
To get the unpopulated report out. So all I'm getting is a blank report with no data but the layout (titles etc) are there.
Next step is to get the data in!
Boy, I never thought I'd see the day when I would miss good ol' VFP's Report Designer bless it!!

You are going down the path of insanity, given a choice of using Crystal and eating a bowl of worms - most here would seriously consider the worms.
There was a discussion here, I'll look for it later, along the lines of which report engine to use for stand alone reports (no server installation etc) the winner was DevX and SSRS, the loser by unanimious vote was Crystal.

I'm a newbie so apologies if I'm asking a dumb question.
A colleague showed me a web site VS2008 solution which had a mix of C# controls and other modules in VB code.
I've created a Windows Forms based application and I've found some cool classes in C# that I'd love to use.
Is there any way to do this in the same application.
I'm using VS2008 with .NET 3.5

Right click on the node called "References" in your solution-explorer to add a reference to the C#-assembly, and you're good to go

The C# project is in it's own project so not quite sure which file to add as a reference?

You can either add;
- the generated assembly file, as found in the bin\debug folder,
- the complete .csproj file (by choosing the menu File, Add, Existing Project)
The first method is the easiest to perform, the second method compiles the C# code if you build your own code (updating everything that has changed in the C#-project)

AFAIK there should not be any difference in the classes available in C# and those in VB.Net unless you wrote it.
In case you have written it and its just a matter of using classes, then create a class library project, compile it to a dll and add as reference.

Hello everybody,
in order to group radio buttons (and other controls) I use a class "clsCheckGroup" which inherits GroupBox.
When it comes to using it on a form I face visual differences between other (normal) groupboxes and my "checkgroup" (i.e. font color). In the designer I found that the normal groupboxes implement "me.Groupname.UseVisualStyleBackColor = True" which my class can't implement (error msg: "...is not a member of...").
What would I have to do (i.e. add to my class) in order to use the visual styles?

What? I am not sure what you want. Do you want an installer that can be run a limited number of times or do you want to restrict the number of users that can use your software?

I have added two COM components (Vlc player and windows media player) in my project. I wanted to know whether I should add some reference or do anything like that during building the set up and deployment project. Will those two component name be same in all machine?

You should include them in your installer, as you cannot be sure that you PC on which the software is installed will always have them installed.

Hi Everyone,
I have a question about remoting. We have a server app running on a TCP port where clients can connect to do do all sorts of stuff. These clients are connected over the internet.
At the backend, we have our database which the clients query and some other applications ( including management app for the clients, a website etc) connects to this database.
Recently, we started moving everything into remoting hosted on IIS for easier use and scalibility ( since most of these apps are doing the same stuff in the same database)
Now my question is regarded to the Server application. In there, we have a list of clients ( list(of MyClientClass) to represent the collection of connected clients.
I would like to be able to query this "live" list of connected clients and do stuff with them from my different applications. Moreover, i would like to be able to put multiple of these Servers but still be able to treat the connected clients as one collection (if possible).
I was thinking remoting both the "client class" as the list of connected clients. Although this has a few minor performance drawbacks ( servers and IIS hosted remoting are in the same place connected over 1 Gbit Ethernet so that should not be such a worry right ?), it makes it easy to interact with the connected client collection.
Is this the way to go or should i consider other options ?
