What is the criteria for selecting an article for the Monthly competition? Rating only? Popularity?
If it were to be found worthy, how would my "Being a Programmer" article be categorized? It's not for a specific language or framework.

Their are only a select few competitions that are meant for particular languages. If your article does not fall into one of those categories, then I do not believe that it gets considered. Yes, this is a minor drawback to writing articles, but it would be complete chaos if their was a competition for every category listed on the CodeProject. Occasionally their are new competitions, but even then they are only temporary.
I believe the articles are selected with the following criteria:
1) The article must be new and pertaining to the particular article competition category
2) The top articles with regards to popularity are selected to be displayed for each competition.

If anything is broken, I think it's the way articles are categorized and awarded prizes. It's ridiculous for an average article to be awarded a prize, while an excellent article is excluded.

How would you change the categorization? I can't think of any way but by language.

I believe that the categorization should be by Chapter - the LHS menu. Unfortunately, currently the chapters themselves are screwed up. The major division should be by framework, but that is not how it is set up. It's absurd to have MFC stuff split between two chapters. And please don't mention filters.
The fact that quality articles are being excluded from the monthly competition is a symptom of the categories being out of whack. Every article should be eligible for awards, etc. If anyone disagrees with that, I'd like to hear the reason. Just saying "it doesn't fit into an award-eligible category" is nonsense.

Why is it absurd that MFC is split between two chapters? The Chapters and Sections are split by topic, not by technology. This was done specifically to allow us to add new technologies without constantly having to tweak the Chapters/Sections. When C# came out we ended up replicating a bunch of sections because we had the chapters setup by framework, and now with Ruby, F#, IronPython etc etc the problem would be multiplied many-fold
We've toyed with the idea of parallel taxonomies but that didn't make sense at the time.

Do you mean within a category? Or the problem regarding a great article potentially not fitting into a given category so not being elegible.
How about
a) we have a 'Best Overall Article' comp each month
b) we totally ditch the whole competition voting thing and go purely on ratings

Keeping the current categories would be fine as long as no articles were excluded. What if there was a category "All the articles that don't fit into any other category". I think this would probably amount to a Non-programming article category. Then no article would be excluded.

"All the articles that don't fit into any other category" doesn't flow off the tongue very well. How about "Best General Article?" Would we include SQL in this or should we have a SQL category?
I'm really tempted to just ditch the whole voting form thing and do a straight SELECT for each category for which we have sponsored prizes, then a SELECT for the best article which isn't elegible for one of those sponsored categories and try and put together some CodeProject swag. That way we can add and subtract categories quickly and not have the issue of having members have to vote on each comp voting form after they have probably already voted on the articles themselves. It also means no list of 6-10 competitions taking up homepage space.
At the least I'll add a 'Other' category because there are great articles not getting a chance.

I think the articles are auto-selected using their tags. So you could try and cheat the system by adding a C# tag to your article and hope that Chris is busy with stuff to notice

Nah - I'm inherently honest, and beyond certain instances of swearing, I have no wish to try skirting the site's controls.

I was seeing one users' profile whose article was listed under 'Pending Moderation'. But the profile page shows count as zero.
I was just curious whether the profile page shows only 'committed records' and since pending moderation is like in between transaction, it does not show up. Is the understanding correct?

When a new article is submitted we go through the
Article Editor - Step 1 to 3 . Now in the step 2
I check mark "Work in Progress - do not make public"
and keep on editing my article and finally submit it
later by 14 day's by making it public .
When I goto the home page -> Article -> Latest
and select filter Article Since "Yesterday"
I am not able to view my article which I made public yesterday.

Once you submit an article it will have to be moderated by the Gold (or above) members. It's now showing in the list of articles.

1. I started writing the on Date:-13 Oct 2008
and could not complete it so i marked it as
"Work in Progress - do not make public".
2. Edited the article couple of times and then
finally submitted it on Date :- 28 Oct 2008 .
My article has dates shown as
Posted : 13 Oct 2008
Updated: 24 Oct 2008
In theory they are perfect , but my intention was not to
submit the article till its accomplished and wanted to have
a Posted Date of the Day when I finally submission my article.
The only other way I see to do this is to edit the article online
if I am not done copy the code on my local drive and quit .
When finally the article is ready post it , but this is a bit labor's work.

The work around is to prepare your article offline, and then when you're ready to do the whole shooting match, just copy/paste the text into the wizard, editing as needed. That's the way I do it.
