If you're planning on putting a system into place at your workplace, make sure you evaluate Rational ClearCase http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational_ClearCase[^]. It's by far the best system I've used, and the only one I've used that supports multiple sites well.

Subversion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software)[^] is also well worth a look. It's my first choice at home, but I've friends that use it in a commercial environment and they tell me it works well for them.
