You are actually assigned a new reference here, not changing the object the reference refers to. Try this...

class Program
{
    class MyClass
    {
        public int x;
    }

    static void changeMyClass1(MyClass myClass )
    {
        myClass.x = 100;
    }

    static void changeMyClass2(ref MyClass myClass )
    {
        myClass.x = 100;
    }

    static void Main(string[] args)
    {
        MyClass instance1 = new MyClass();
        MyClass instance2 = new MyClass();

        instance1.x = 0;
        instance2.x = 0;

        changeMyClass1(instance1);
        changeMyClass2(ref instance2);

        Console.WriteLine(instance1.x);//outputs 100
        Console.WriteLine(instance2.x);//outputs 100
    }
}

Like CG said, they are by ref, by default. Both instances will change. Strings behave differently, which, in my opinion is bad.

Knowledge is hereditary, it will find its way up or down.
