The Description:
I am a new Developer and have developed some nice useful custom Small Business Management software while at University. I am thinking of modifying the software and using it to taste the Market of Small businesses in my community (Home town).
Most of the businesses in my community have not used custom softwares (they use e.g Ms Word, Ms Excel to perfom their daily transactions), I wanna bring that to a change.
I want to modify the software to their interest (Add, remove or improve some of its features or start a new software according to their requirements)
The Problem:
I don't know how much to charge them, given that they also don't have knowledge about softwares.
Please help cause I think this can be my break through and Can also be a chance to help Small Businesses in my community to run efficiently.

How are we supposed to know what your potential clients are prepared to pay? I live in a completely different country, so I have no idea what is "the norm" around your area. It's up to you to do some market research - that means you are going to have to get in touch with businesses and find out if they genuinely do have a need, and how much they would be willing to pay to satisfy the need. Now, this is going to be tricky for you to do, because if they don't use the software currently and don't seem to miss it you are going to have to generate interest in them.
Are you really sure that you have something so revolutionary that they are going to jump at investing in your product? There's a reason that they are currently just using Office - it satisfies their needs right now. You are going to have a tough time convincing them that they need to make the transition.

It's unlikely you'll find a job in the UK with a CV like this. If you sent it to me, I'd put it straight in the bin.
All you've done is list a bunch of technologies. So what? Anyone can do this, whether they actually know the technologies or not. I could write a computer program to create a CV like yours. There will be plenty of other people out there looking for work that know the same technologies as you do. Why should a employer give your CV the time of day over the dozens of other identical CVs he/she has seen that day?
You need to sell yourself to a prospective employer, provide information in your CV that sets you apart from other, equally qualified candidates. If I was reviewing your CV, I would want to know the following:
- What projects have you worked on?
- What was your role in those projects?
- What technologies did you use, and why did you decide to use them?
- What are the significant achievements that you have made during the course of your career?
You should also target your CV at companies that are more likely to value your experience. For instance, if you have specialist experience in the financial sector, target your CV at financial institutions. This should provide more success than adopting a scattershot approach.

Can anyone suggest a good employment agency in New Zealand, who specialise in Electronic Engineering / Avionics / Software / technical fields? Or anyone who works / has worked in NZ who can suggest potential employers?
At the age of 46 I am trying to relocate the family, and I need to identify potential employers. I am planning on making a short (2 week) visit to NZ about the end of July or early August, partly to see a bit of the country but mainly to talk to potential employers.

Thanks - I'll try those. From what I've seen of Internet employment sites, though, they tend to be very USA-centered (probably because that's the biggest employment market.)
Once I've tried a few more weeks on the employment message board, I think I'll try the lounge - it's not entirely on-topic, but lots of people are in the lounge!

Sun Microsystems or Opus International are big employers over here for engineers and software developers.
For general job searching www.jobs.co.nz or www.seek.co.nz are the two most popular sites for job listings.
You could also try the job section on www.trademe.co.nz which is also a big website.

I've tried jobs.co.nz and seek.co.nz - there's a couple of possibles, but nothing that really suits what I've done in the past. The main problem is that most of my work history has been development and support for the South African Air Force, and NZ shut down the interesting bits of their air force some years ago.
I'll have a look at the Sun Microsystems, Opus International, and trademe.co.za sites.

Hello everybody. I've never posted here before, but I have read a lot of articles. I am a computer science student at the University of Central Florida. I have a project for my technical writing class that I need help with. I have to write a fake application letter and resume for a real job that I might qualify for. I need to have a professional in my field (software development) review the letter and resume and give me some pointers on improvement. I don't know anybody in my field so I was hoping somebody here could read over these documents and give me some pointers on format, content, and some practical advice for a computer science student looking for his first job.
If anybody would help me I would really appreciate it. I am a little apprehensive about asking busy people to have to do homework, but it is a requirement for the assignment. If anybody decides to help, thank you.

OK - I can only speak for the way we would do this in the UK, but I would have to say that you wouldn't get past the first hurdle. Your CV (resume) is too bland and doesn't sell you to me quickly enough. Even though you have limited experience, I would expect that to be near the top. You spend a lot of time selling yourself to the HR department, and completely forget to sell yourself to me as the manager.
I see roughly 10 CVs a week, and don't have time to wade my way to the bottom. Sell yourself at the top and make me notice you.

Manager is very important. But if you have some HR moron that doesn't know what management is really looking for, they'll discard the resume/CV and it never makes it to the manager at all. It requires careful balance...
