Oh, business is a bit too good. But I have a national customer base and some times I have a multi-national customer base. I'd honestly like a break but I won't complain.

Boise has become quite the technology city since I was a kid. I grew up in SE Idaho and I've seen Boise come a long way since I was a kid.

Yeah, I've been doing wireless and wired networking a long time. I've found that many claim to know what they are doing but few really do. Each new client I get has some big names taking care of them before me. I get in there and nothing works right, everything is such a mess. I usually spend 1 or 2 weeks fixing everything before things are really smooth and nimble again.

Too bad I love writing software way more than I love networking. I could make a good living doing it but I make a lot more writing software.

I started by asking somebody at Linksys and I think I confused them to the point where they hung up on me, they claim that it was a technical problem Roll eyes | :rolleyes:

We've been using baby monitors for 6 years and one of my kids is alive because of high-end baby monitors (but she's got chronic health issues). So I have a lot of experience with baby monitors and wireless routers. One thing that could be causing a problem with your baby monitor is noise on the electric circuit for the base and/or the receiver. Try putting them into decent (1000 J) surge protectors and see if that helps. If it doesn't get some little (very small 250 Va) battery backups and try to clean up the electricity going into the base and receiver. I know you'll think I'm nuts but you just have to trust me. I doubt it's your router that is the problem unless the interference goes away completely when the router is off. If that's the case is the router plugged into the same electric circuit as the monitor base? If so get it on a different electric circuit. My guess is something is causing noise on the circuit.

I’ve been unable to get the wireless 2.4GHz monitoring system to work. I’ve researched some other options and think that I might have an idea for something that would work.

I’ve found some wireless network cameras that I could use on my existing 2.4GHz network. The problem is that they won’t immediately alert me when sound or motion is detected. They simply send an email.

How much would you charge to write a simple application that would work with a motion sensing camera by opening ( or "bringing to the front") the video view of the camera that detects motion?

I'm not even sure if this is possible but it seems like if the camera is sending 'motion detection information' then a program could somehow capture it and execute the desired processes.

I have some VB.NET experience but probably not enough to make something like this work. It would be fun to figure it out though so I'm going to give it a shot. I just wanted to know if this was something that you think can be done and a "ball park" cost.

In the web interface you can configure an "Intrusion" sensitivity that will react to "Motion" and send an email. Seems pretty cool!

Hi.

i'm about to buy a new computer for programming as my old one is nearly dead when it comes to compiling.

The new computer contains 2xOpteron 2214 2Ghz processors, is that a bad choice when it comes to C# development? Does the opteron run with a diffrent platform? or are they still x86-64 compatible?

For most projects that's overkill, but if you're compiling a big project or hosting a large local DB you can never have too much hardware. Opterons are the high end server/workstation version of the Athlon64, they're x86-64 chips.

Dell Optiplex disk size limit

According to the Dell Optiplex 745 technical specification, SATA-II drives of up to 250GB are supported. I have a couple of these systems with one such drive in, and now want to put in a second drive.

Is the size limit a BIOS limitation, or just marketing fluff?

Has anyone successfully added a larger disk to one of these?

(And I'm still smarting from the 'feature' of Symantec AV Corp Edition which stopped these puppies from booting, even in safe mode, until I applied a registry patch. Talk about 'fitness for purpose', although I suppose Symantec's legal weasels would argue that you cannot become infected by a computer virus if the computer won't boot, so it provides the protection they're claiming...)

I think that's a per physical disk limit but you can have as many at/under that size as you want (at least that's what I thought). But it's Dell. Have you asked on the Dell Community site? I ask that not meaning to push you off or be a smart @$$ I'm really just wondering if you have and what kind of response you got.

I have two free SATA connectors internally, (since there are four, one in use for HDD and another for DVD), and I am assured by Dell that I can connect in another hard drive.

I looked on the community site first (of course!), and it kind of implied that there used to be a BIOS cap, but that this doesn't apply to SATA drives, so it doesn't really answer the question.

Dell have a vested interest in this, since they want to sell me their drives, and point me at the literature which says up to 250GB per drive, so I don't expect a thorough answer.

Empirically, I could determine it, but I'm not buying a bigger drive just so I can try it, since I'd then lose on reselling the drive if it didn't work. I wondered, therefore, whether anyone frequenting these forums had done this already.

Well the short answer is no. I have not done this. I've stacked in two SATA drives at 320 gigs and 160 gigs and not had any trouble. That put me at 480 gigs total but I'm not even sure if there was a cap on that particular system.

You are right to not trust Dell in that regard. I just recently learned (and almost regretted) that if you buy one of their servers don't plan on much freedom for IRQ's and adding devices you just won't have the option. All I wanted was dual video cards and getting them to work proved to be an exercise in patience and practice. I think I shot 40 hours right out my behind getting them to work (and I did get them to work, even though Dell said it wouldn't).

So I at least cannot give you a definite answer but hopefully others can. I'd be willing to bet a silver dollar you should be able to drop one in and not have any trouble. But certainly don't try that because my remarks inspired you to do so. You'd have take that decision under your own advice... if you do go that route keep a bottle of Advil close by and you should be okay. "Numb the pain and the brain will follow." Big Grin | :-D

Call me sadistically curious but reply back here if you take the plunge and let me know your results.
