Let's first convert it to VB.NET:

strActual = "BAT BALL GOALKEEPER"<br />
intPosition = strActual.IndexOf("BALL")

Now it's very simple to convert it to C#:

strActual = "BAT BALL GOALKEEPER";<br />
intPosition = strActual.IndexOf("BALL");

Note: There is a difference how strings are handled in .NET compared to VB6. The index is zero based, not one based, and IndexOf it returns -1 if the string is not found, not 0.

I found the ADO.NET Core Reference to be really easy to learn from despite being a reference after all. It doesn't target the 2.0 version of the Framework, but allot still applies. I supplemented it by Programming ADO.NET 2.0 Applications Advanced Topics which is also good.

I'd be willing to sell the ADO.NET Core Reference if you're interested.

Hi Guys,
Im creating my own personal app to store logon accounts and password. Could someone please give me any suggestions on where or how to store that information (and make it secure)?
The thing is I dont wish to use sql i would like it like visual basic 6 where a database is imbedded or something.
or maybe store it in a file but i dont want the data file to be seperate of the app for ppl to open or smth.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Smile | :)

I use the small tag to make the text a bit smaller than the message body, and some dashes to make a separator. That is one way to do it.

You could always use the Express edition of SQL Server. Otherwise, XML or Access *gasp*. Obviously, use the Framework Crypto classes. Don't try to roll your own.

Don't be so concerned about anyone viewing the information, just make sure that the information they see is useless.

Store the hash code of the passwords, not the passwords themselves. That way the passwords can not be recreated from the stored information. When you verify a password, get the hash code for the entered password and compare against the stored hash code.

You can use for example MD5 to get a hash code for the passwords. (The GetHashCode method of System.String is not suitable for creating a long term hash code, as it may change between versions.)

hi all,

i am a beginner in C#.
please can any one suggest me a solution?
I am having two forms.first one is "Login" and Second one is "Entry"
In "Login" form i have a text box "Login Id". i want the value that is entered in this text during login in the next from "Entry".

u can store the loginid in string and can pass it to entry form
and can retrive that value in constructor of entry form

Hi,

I have a problem concerning to application data, how to use and what to store.

I have application reports that are installed during application setup.
Inside my application, the users are able to run the reports and also to create new ones.

Now, I'm installing the reports in Application Data\AllUsers\..., and reports created by users, go to the same folder.

My question is: Is this the correct way to do this?

Should my installed reports go to Program Files\... (Application installation folder), and user created report to Application Data\All Users\...?

Does anyone knows best practices for this problem?

I don't think it really matters, in my 'Application Data' folder, apps store things like their settings, playlists, extra data they need etc. But ive also seen all of these things in a programs folder in 'Program Files'

I don't know what the 'Best Practice' is but, i think its OK to put the data in either place

You almost have things setup correctly, but the CredentailCache.DefaultCredentials will supply the request object with the default system credentials, not the username and password required by the web site.

In order to do that, you will need to do something like this:

Uri uri = new Uri(url);
CredentialCache credCache = new CredentialCache();
NetworkCredential userCred = new NetworkCredential(username, password, domain);
credCache.Add(uri, "Basic", userCred);

The "NTLM" in the call is a string that specifies the authentication type. The valid choices are "NTLM", "Digest", and "Basic". You will need to use the type that is appropriate for your specific case.

Also, make sure that you don't need a proxy to be specified.
