So, what's the difference between VS 2005 c++ express and the other versions?
The only thing that's mentioned on the MS site is that it doesn't have MFC or ATL, or the profiler. Is that it?

I thought the tester edition does that. You can group tests and run that group, run single tests, or run the whole test.

Hello,
I got my hands on a (legal) copy of the standard edition on the 7th of Nov. I can't live without it anymore. I just love it. The .NET framework 2.0, C++, C# intellisense, everything.. A shame that I have to port everything I write back to .NET 1.1 since they don't have 2005 at school. Maybe I shouldn't write my projects code in 2005, but I just love the whole IDE and I already can't live without the improved intellisense

I'm hoping CP sells the Standard version (with a Dundas bundle). I don't appear to need the Pro version.

I am also going for the standard version. The only thing the pro version has that the standard version does not have, as far as I could tell, is SQL Server 2005 developer edition. I already have MSDE 2000 wich suits my needs so why pay an extra US$800 for something I do not really need. I hope I can get it from CP as I would really like to support this site financially

Do you happen to know what a "user experience" is, and how the "streamlined" one in the Standard edition is different from the "full" one in the Pro version?

I have not got a clue. But as long as the functionality is there, for $800 I can work around any differences in "user experience".

There's also SQL Server 2005 Express, which works like MSDE, and there's a free version of the management tools for it.

I found that the standard edition does not support multiple project debugging. If you have a lib or dll from another project in your solution, you cannot step into the source code or see any variables or something. I verified this by looking at the output of the debugger (dr watson) and it says that all the symbols are loaded, but vs says that they are not..
This is not a big issue for me, it only improves my skills of writing self debugging code

Extra US$800?
But at www.programmersparadise.ca I see the VS 2005 Pro Upgrade available for $648 (Canadian dollars I presume). I'm guessing the upgrade is applicable for anyone who already has an earlier VS or VC++ product (like VC++ 6). This is probably the version I'm getting after I use up my VS 2005 Pro Trial DVD (90 days).

The standard edition is more than enough for small shops and standalone developers. There is enough OSS available that has a better price / satisfaction rate than spending more $ on the pro edition.. 
I never thought that I would say that about OSS, but $$$ are just harder to come by.

1) Chris says that (at least initally) they won't be able to sell it here (huge-ass bummer if you ask me). I wanted it before my Christmas vacation started, so I had to find it elsewhere.
2) I found it on Amazon.com for $262, and they are promising 1-day shipping (for an additional $17). I ordered it this morning, so we'll see...

We just heard today that we'll be able to offer VS 2005! Woot!
Not sure on pricing or dates, but we should be getting a good deal and we're expecting we'll be able to start selling in a couple of weeks or so.

couple weeks... I'm just surprise to see how long it is to sell VS2005. Even place like Amazon have insane 3-5 week shipping (after Christmas ?¿?).
I think they have a serious production/printing or distribution problem... usually we can buy a product the day it's released... not a few month after.
If it's not too long, I will wait to buy it from codeproject to express my satisfaction of this web site.
