Johnny Standley's "It's in the Book" is a good reminder that the obvious can be found in the most likely places. Such is true with development. Throughout the day I get many questions from coworkers and denizens of the community asking what a particular thing is: "What's a DataRow?" people ask. I remind them...it's in the docs.

Consulting the documentation is always a good first approach to solving any problem. It's what separates the "men from the boys". A good developer is one that knows that he or she can't remember anything but knows how to find it in an instant and understand what that function or class does. Almost all the information you need is in the docs.

There are times that even top-rate developers don't understand things. That's when a community helps out best. Asking questions that can easily be answered by typing a single word into the Index in Visual Studio .NET is a waste of the community's valuable time. After some time, the community may stop responding for that reason. Do some basic research into the problem first and then ask away. You'll be a better developer for it.

Remember the old adage, "give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life." If you're spoon-fed the answers to basic questions, you'll never learn and will be no better than a drag-n-drop code monkey. Crack open those docs and start learning what those methods really do and research the right classes and methods for a project before starting, and you're on your way to supremacy.

So, if you're ever in a bind remember that the answer is most likely in the docs. If that answer doesn't make sense or the problem is more complex than a sentence or two or can answer, CodeProject is your one-stop community for great help. In that case...

It's in the forums!
