To apply to join this group simply hit the "Apply to join this group" button.

To seek the wisdom, guidance, and hopefully a little enlightenment, email focus@codeproject.com and we'll work out a time to discuss your thoughts.

Hello my name is Kris. I’m here because I am passionate about helping non-techie people to overcome their fear of learning SQL.

I know what it is like to not know where to start or whether the time spent learning is worth the effort. That is why I am here to help you to:
- Get started in an easy to follow step-by-step manner.
- Use your time wisely so you focus on what is important to learn to get the most value from your time.
- Answer your questions. Really! Just post a comment and I’ll respond. I’m here to help.

It wasn’t long ago that I was helping a colleague with some reporting. She didn’t know where to start and soon got overwhelmed and lost as she didn’t know SQL.

I felt really bad, as she was under pressure to get some summary information to her boss, the built-in reports were falling short, and to make them better would require her to know SQL. At that time that seemed impossible! It in dawned on me, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Then I discovered a way for anyone with the desire to easily learn SQL. I worked with my co-worker, started to teach her what I learned and soon she was able to write reports and answer her boss’ questions without getting stressed or ploughing hours into manipulating data in Excel.

It hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes the information seems abstract or too conceptual. In this case I’ve found out that a visual explanation is best. I really like to use diagrams or videos to explain hard-to-grasp ideas.

Having video, pictures, and text really help to reinforce the point and enable learning.

And now I want to help you get the same results.

Software Developer (Senior)

English born, former Professor of Computer Science at a no-longer existing college in England. Has previously lived in England, Sweden (very briefly), France (also very briefly) and Germany (six long years). Now lives in the United States where he is happily married with one son, another adopted son and a new puppy (barky and bitey - hopefully this will wear off as she gets older). Has designed and written an expert system for test flight data analysis (jet fighters - very exciting and very noisy), automated robot control systems, designed and written two specialized interpreted languages and implemented a Rexx interpreter (twice). He is now based in Maryland, USA and most recently maintained an extensive and heavily used medical and administrative intranet/extranet and associated systems using ASP.NET mostly in C# (with some old VB still hanging around) with a lot of JavaScript and various bits of SQL. Just started a new job as a G-man - will update as time goes by.

In his spare time he writes code for fun and is currently working on a simple space exploration, trading and resource management game (more to become an expert in jQuery and SVG than anything these days). Other activities include board-games and swimming for health. Past activities include Judo, fencing, archery, pistol and rifle shooting and other peaceful activities, not to mention sailing, skiing, scuba diving and riding horses, camels and elephants.

Privileges

Members need to achieve at least one of the given member levels in the given reputation categories in order to perform a given action. For example, to store personal files in your account area you will need to achieve Platinum level in either the Author or Authority category. The "If Owner" column means that owners of an item automatically have the privilege. The member types column lists member types who gain the privilege regardless of their reputation level.

Privileges for a group account are based on the priviliges of the administrators of that account.
