I just made a few breakthroughs. That's nice.
What's not nice about it, is the absolute torrent of canned worms it has left in its wake. 
Basically I've unlocked the ability to port a bunch of old code to work on another platform.
And now all that old code is staring me in the face. I'm talking perhaps dozens of libraries.
I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Odd statement. Unclear to me what would stop you from porting something. Unless there was some code protection or encryption.

So entertain yourself by creating a cross compiler. Generally that means producing binaries but nothing stops one from producing source.
It can be full feature or just a one shot hack. With some hand rolling for the more complex bits.

Lack of knowledge. The Arduino framework automagically handles NACKs, ACKs, starts, and stops in the I2C bus signaling. The ESP-IDF does not. So I had to figure out the rhyme and reason behind the automagic.
This isn't about cross compiling. That wouldn't solve anything. I'm targeting the same processor either way, just different HAL and software package.

The media has been doing this (referencing each other) for years. Invariably when you dig into the source you discover that it was either misquoted, taken out of context, or simply not true, but the media has long given up doing their job. These Large Language Learning systems only do it faster and make it more obvious.

The FBI also did it with the Russian collusion thing. Whether you like or dislike Trump, the Russian collusion allegation was a prime example of a circular reference and in this case they (FBI) knew it all along.

That is definitely old. At least in the early 1900s in the US the newspapers would make up stories based on nothing at all and then promote them as the truth. They did that to sell newspapers but also to influence public opinion.
