Bill Gates died, and went up to Heaven, where Saint Peter showed him to his house; a beautiful 20 room house, with grounds and a tennis court. Bill Gates was pleased, and spent many months enjoying the amenities of Heaven.
One day, he was enjoying one of Heaven's many fine parks, when he ran into a man dressed in a fine tailored suit.
"That is a nice suit, my friend," said Gates. "Where did you get it?"
"Actually," the man replied, "I was given a hundred of these when I got here. I've been treated really well. I got a mansion on a hill overlooking a beautiful lake, with a huge five-hundred acre estate, a golf course, and three Rolls Royces."
"Were you a Pope, or a doctor healing the sick?" asked Gates.
"No," said his new friend, "Actually, I was the Captain of the Titanic."
Hearing this made Gates so angry that he immediately stalked off to find St. Peter.
Cornering Peter, he told him about the man he had just met, saying, "How could you give me a paltry little house, while you're showering new cars, a mansion, and fine suits on the Captain of the Titanic? I invented the Windows operating system! Why does he deserve better?"
"Yes, but we use Windows," replied Peter, "and the Titanic only crashed once."

For a format that should be a ![Elephant | [mastadon]](https://codeproject.global.ssl.fastly.net/script/Forums/Images/elephant.gif) standard there are basically no easy, portable classes that parse that format to obtain a time_t. The only ones I saw around are very incomplete. The only library that does that is Boost, which is not an option.
No content, just ranting.
Bonus rant: GNU C library sucks. No __time64_t to force the use of 64 bit, no sscanf_s which should be standard... damn ungulates.

I find it amusing that supposedly the printf-family of functions' format strings are bad and streaming operators should be used yet the std:: time format functions seem to use format strings.

I agree. The primary argument I have read against them is there is no type checking and that is no longer true. VC++ gives warnings on types that don't match the format specifier. Plus, there's thing we refer to as testing. It can catch all of those errors. In short, I don't buy that argument at all. I have yet to see a compelling argument that sways me away from using printf and I have read them for at least twenty years.

It requires the format string, which makes it useless. The format is standard, I don't have to parse it and figure out which variation of the format is used. If I wished to do so I would have used my old friend sscanf and an ad hoc function.
Why should I write it on my own for a format that is an ISO standard, anyway?

Easy. Or the same with tm structure. Not a semiobscure infrastructure to build my own date format and parser, considering that it is an ISO standard.
