The Republican mantra is "Profit at all costs". Opening up and freely letting the virus spread will only do two things. Kill more people and give the virus more and more opportunity to mutate, possibly into something the current vaccines cannot protect against. All so businesses can survive over people surviving.
Texas has 7% of its population vaccinated and is opening up 100% next week like there's no chance of anyone getting infected.

I do find it interesting that how people see this virus tends to be the same as others in their political party. I hope someone does a serious study on that. I do find that interesting.
Your language is a bit over the top, in my opinion. No one is treating it like a common cold. Every state has had shutdowns and that has never happened for the cold, but I believe I get your point even through the hyperbole.
Where I live, schools opened up in August 5 days a week and there have been no major issues. I have gone to the movie theaters and not had a problem. One of my kids works at a grocery store and has been in public since day one. We have gotten the virus but it was not big deal. Other people at my work have gotten it and recovered quickly. My point is, from everything I experience I can see that the virus is not as big of a deal as others are making it. Of course, that is not to say that some have not been impacted greatly.
So, there are 2 sides. One side that thinks Covid is severe enough to shut everything down and hide until it is gone. And there might be some science to back that up. And then there is the other side, those that have actual experience (the best kind of science possible) to say that we can get back to normal and still be fine overall.
Neither side is denying science. Both sides are picking the science that makes them feel more comfortable. But all this talk of the other side being idiots or denying science is just nonsense.

Oh look, more anecdotes that mean nothing on the larger scale, but make YOU feel better because it didn't directly impact YOU.
If that's how you're going to play it, let me drop my anecdotes on you. In my social circles, 12 infected with 4 dead. My parents (in the age group with the highest mortality rate) got it from a couple of guys who had to be brought in for a plumbing problem that couldn't wait. My parents survived, but that was a scary couple of weeks.

No, because this was after Trump had already started doing things. There was never any "if we do nothing." Remember, he shut down travel to and from China and Biden called him a xenophobe? And then later towards election time Biden kept claiming Trump didn't react quickly enough? Anyway, let politics stay in politics.

Trump shutdown travel from China that took effect Jan 31st, but that didn't shutdown travel from China. The ban only impacted non-US citizens who had been in China in the last 2 weeks. It also didn't apply to immediate family of US citizens. We still had 380,000 people come in from China after that date, according to US Commerce data.

Three days after last year Purim festieves was the first day kids didn't go to scholl because of COVID.
Since then we had two and a half lockdown, we - mostly - wearing mask and working a lot from home (except those had lost their job).
But personally I found these times we locked in-house together very good...

The really weird thing is how "familiar" it's all got - to the point where you see an older TV program with people in shops, not social distancing, not wearing masks, and you feel uncomfortable ...
I suspect it's going to take quite a while to get back to "normal", if we ever do.
Last summer I had to make an appointment to see a jeweler, and everyone was happy that I was going to turn up in a mask and gloves. A year ago, and the police would be waiting for me ...

I will never feel uncomfortable seeing people unmasked and close together. I constantly feel uncomfortable when I see people in masks and socially distancing. You'll be surprised how quickly normal returns to well, being normal.
This whole thing will turn into a memory of a freakin' weird thing that we managed to survive. The only caveat for you, unfortunately, are the lingering affects on you and Mrs.
Even at the current level, Next Monday Mrs. & I get our second shots; my son's had his and his wife soon to follow; Visiting season will reopen. My daughter/son-in-law not vaccinated. Both sets have kids in school/nursery-school so they've already upped their acceptable risk.
Funny thing about masks: I've observed that in many parts of Asia, before all of this, it was common for people to walk the streets with a mask. Sometimes for particle filtration.
What we won't get used to is the climate swirling down the shitter - it keeps changing and that will be a problem that will likely distract us from the rest
