I had a downvote troll for awhile, and CP staff took care of it after it became a consistent problem. I didn't bug them with it right away, because I don't like to bother them over petty things, but I don't like being trolled in principle, so after a month or two of it, I brought the issue to the attention of the staff, and they investigated and sorted it out quickly. I love this place. The staff are stellar, and for the most part so is the rest of the community.

Take this with a grain of salt, or maybe the whole shaker. I've not done an article nor have I voted on an article.
The only way that a downvote helps the community is with an explanation. I can read / write an article and not understand the nuances that could be associated with the topic. I need a constructive comment to make me a better writer/coder/employee/person/..., the list could go on. And if I'm just reading an article the comment will help with my understanding. I always read the comments, mostly for the questions and answers.
I'm good with having my account displayed for any vote I may make positive or negative. It's called accountability. I'm also ok with disabling my account if my downvotes (without constructive or any comments) exceeds a given level.
But I do have a question. Has the amount of downvoting gone down since the soapbox was removed? It is far to easy to hate on someone when they don't believe as you do. Regardless of what the belief is.

That was my first thought too when this was brought up a long time ago, but I was told that people would get into tit-for-tat downvote wars when a comment was required for a one star vote. So that accountability attempt backfired in that it created more problems.
But as a concept, I like it. It's just that some people are why we can't have nice things. 
I didn't really participate in the soapbox, but I have wandered into soapbox territory elsewhere prompted or unintentional gibbering on my part, even recently, and as soon as I realize what I'm doing i disengage immediately because otherwise i won't stop myself.
So i wonder if maybe some of those messages might have led to downvotes. I don't really think so. I've been pretty agreeable for the most part here i think, even in my disagreements, but we all have our buttons, and if i pushed one, it wouldn't surprise me. I've been here long enough.
The short answer is, I don't know but in my case, I doubt it just because I wasn't one of the more politically vocal people here even when soapbox was around.

In that case, how do I follow your rep points so I can join in the fun? Because I care about trash in the streets so therefore I must also care that someone didn't like what you wrote.
The next time you notice someone unhappy with your service please let me know first. I want to be outraged with you.

First, in case you haven't noticed, this place is only incidentally the internet. There are those who come and go, (possibly like yourself?) but it's a community. People get along to different degrees; argue; laugh; even, as with the start of the thread, they "show there stuff" and hope to be the better for it with our little gestalt.
You, in a prior post, more or less remarked about being adults.
Well - in nature, he higher animals spend a large part of their life playing and even continue into adulthood. The bottom feeders grow up quickly.

It's not the points - it's the persona that serepitously (and anonymously) run around criticizing the members. You may have heard of similar entities, oft referred to as 'trolls'.

But again, what I don't get is why you care. They are imaginary points. You don't get to turn them in for anything other than your own boost in self-esteem by people seeing how many points you have. And if that's what you need, you have way bigger problems.

It's not the points... I just brought up the point deduction value just in case someone knew whether or not the down-vote was weighted like the up-vote, and maybe we could at least determine the approximate user status of the voter.

Well what does a fine adult, like yourself, care about?
So far, it seems like it's primarily criticizing other peoples considerations.
Or, perhaps from the obvious popularity of the icon-based votes, we like to add bits of fun to our lives. That's OK with you, right? Otherwise, we'll all stop immediately.

That's the problem. I'm fine with people not finding an article worth their own time, but I can't make it better if I don't know why. That's the whole point of my complaint, so it most definitely *is* a thing.

I wrote this a little earlier to someone else, but it bears repeating here.
Recently I submitted an article and codebase that I had worked quite hard on, and tested (i thought)
I only got a single vote, and it was one star.
That does tank my overall article rep and it makes me wonder if that impacts ranking and thus search engine results, so for reasons there are real world implications of having a downvote troll - someone that religiously downvotes you particularly if you write niche content that is unpopular but nevertheless important for those who need it. Which I do a lot of.
But more than that - and this goes to JSOP's point - that article contained code that I then tried to use in a commercial product on a platform I thought I had tested it for, and it failed right out of the gate. First time i tried it in the wild. I didn't have time to investigate so I used another offering in the alternative, and there it sits until i get free time to attack it again.
What if that one star was someone who ran into the same problem I did with my code?
Hundreds of people downloaded it. That one comment could have saved everyone who used it and the person that wrote it a lot of hassle.
Maybe if they didn't have the one star option they'd be more inclined to write a scathing comment. I'd still much prefer that to a non-descriptive "general failure" message a one star vote sends.

I'd care in that case. But in that case, I care because I don't like being trolled. In that case it's not about the votes. It's about being harassed. That's something I'd pursue with staff, and I'm not afraid to say so. Especially since they're probably doing it to others too.
And someone might say "it's just a website, get a life!"
What about the other person and their life? Sitting their harassing strangers for daring to contribute. At the other end of that website is a real person engaging in activity designed to undercut the site and harass its users, and that nonsense doesn't have a place in a constructive environment because it runs directly at odds with the spirit of sharing and mentorship that has been cultivated here.
So yeah, I'd feel like a Bad User(TM) for not reporting it. If they're doing it to troll they should get banned. Whether how they do it is downvoting or commenting.
