So the team with whom I consult reached the 6 year milestone, and everyone is getting new laptops. So, I'm working with a coworker showing him how to set up VMware and use virtual machines. This corporate IT laptop is somewhat locked down, generic Windows 11 install, etc. Every time we have to go look for some software, only Edge will launch. now, mind you, we're on a corporate laptop - enterprise edition, used for work, yadayada. Edge kept popping up shopping stuff, sign up for that, do this and get 5% back....
Talk about raising annoying to an Olympic sport.
Meanwhile, trying to get past all the bloatware, the IT permissions, identities, rules and regulations elevated the process to even more pain.

In the very early days of laptops (Mac PowerBooks), corporate supplied mine. With everything I read now, I could no longer abide it. I'd supply my own--or good riddance! Spyware, what amounts to parental controls--no, not for that, just for installing useful software! IT wants to make their life easy by administering a bunch of laptops that are all clones, but that crowd is next to useless anyway, and corporate doesn't trust us plebes, so sod all of these wankers! When I wanted to goof off at work or do other non-work related things, it wasn't any of their business when they got hours at night and at the weekend.

That's why you always have two laptops. One for work and one for personal use. Sometimes, a work laptop needs to be locked down for security reasons.

Agreed. When I work from home using my personal machine, I use Remote Desktop over the VPN to the work machine on my desk. I've also got a network share on the work machine for transferring files, but that's not used very often.
There's no way I'm going to let the IT yabbos get their mitts on my property.

Had a short but interesting conversation a few years back with the IT manager. I was a consultant at the company - still am... anyway, one day he wandered in... I was working with my boss.
Him: "Hey, I noticed you guys are not using company standard laptops. That has to stop."
Boss: "That's fine, but we cannot use standard equipment due to our development needs."
Him: "And what would those be?"
Boss: "sollid state drives, xxx storage 64B of ram, etc."
Him: "That's not our standard configuration...."
Boss: "Well, that's what we need, and that's why we buy it ourselves."
Him; "Hmm, wanders away... "
A couple of years after that, some IT guy walked up to me and wanted to install some corporate software.
Me: "Who are you?"
Him: "I'm from IT, I need to install s/w on this laptop."
Me: "No you don't."
Him: "Yes I do, it's standard."
Me: "Its not the corporations laptop."
Him: "you are not allowed to use personal equipment..."
Me: "Go away, please see my boss. He will make all things clear."
Nope, not getting on my laptop.... no no no

There have been several cases where I won an argument with IT like this:
IT: "You need to stop doing X" or "You need to start doing Y"
Me: "I need that/(not that) to do my job."
IT: "You're violating company policy."
Me: "Unlike you, I bring in money. Lots and lots of money. I win."

And best is... when you ask them for help because some of his crap dopesn't simply work...
I got a PC, with Encrypted Disks with Hardware Signature as a password. Oh... I need a second Ethernet card because I need to access the from the outside isolated work intranet. Add Eth card, PC would not run because the encryption could not be decrypted (relevant Hardware change, although nothing changed, only added)
Many, many calls to the Service Desk, some would not even understad the problem and try to sell me any bullsh1t from their pre-fabricated answers DB, somewhen find a guy that actually understands something from IT and rised a ticket for service level 2. Get a call two or three days after from level 2, they could not do anything against it, ticket for support level 3 set. Another 2 or 3 days waiting, call... oh, that's something I can't solve. Ticket level 4 set, they guy even said "the Hardware Guru level".
Wait for a week, get a call back. Guy explaining me the guidelines and blah blah blah. He wouldn't believe my explanations and of course he wouldn't give me the puk for the bitlocker, so I can boot up windows and set a new password (Note: Laptops and Tablets are ALL with user passwords, hardware signature is only for the PCs).
At the end, I was like very frustrated and some days later speaking with the Key-User of the other department in my building... he said: mmm I think there is another way, let me check.
Two days later the guy came to my office, decrpyted the disks and deactivated the Bitlocker (without needing any administrative rights) using some dos commands, told me to add the ethernet card, activated the bitlocker (again without needing any administrative rights) and told me... when the prompt comes, let it encrypt the disks again and went away. I started to hit the desk with my head and to blame the service desk until I run out of voice.
Even now, a couple of years later, have noticed how my pulse got faster  while typing this message. What a bunch of morons... really.
