Not sure which side is right and which is left.

MO is a common American abbreviation for Medical Officer i.e. Doctor, which is what is intended in the clue.

MO in the UK is more commonly used as an abbreviation for Modus Operandi (Latin for mode of operating or working), especially with the method a specific criminal uses to carry out his/her crimes. It is also used as a shortened version of the word 'moment' as in "I'll see you in a mo".

I have a NetGear VPN router (8-port) for 10 years. last week it stopped working since we had a storm with some lightning.

Last year I got a new Modem from my ISP and it is Gigabytes speed now.

what is the best brand of router can I get now? any recommendations?

I went for a Ubiquiti Dream Machine.
Is better than most home routers, but cost more of course.

For cheaper VPN router, I use Asus 66U, on separate public IP. Has openvpn server and does PPTP. This for separate LAN with cameras, NVR system, no other computers.
For more security and hardware to hardware VPN's, I use Sonicwall SOHO ($$) on its own IP.
I am NOT paranoid, they really are out to get me. Smile | :)

Synology offers VPN and good feature set, I got a Ubiquiti Dream router and it's fantastic, but it can't reach 1gbps, max 600-700mbps, which, in my case is more than enough.

Having VPN server, poe ports, the baility to create VLANS... all this is very nice and good to have.

One thing I've come to realize is that many consumer router manufacturers will put something out to market, and never provide any firmware updates (or they're very slow at doing so)...given a serious-enough vulnerability, you can end up with a perfectly good, recent router that you have no choice but to replace if patches aren't forthcoming.

Network security is hard. How many "experts" do router manufacturers employ to create/maintain their firmware?

All this to say: One question I would ask is, when looking to buy a router, can you immediately replace its firmware with some open-source version such as OpenWRT, DDWRT, Tomato, etc.

I'm no network expert myself, so years ago I was worried if I committed to some open-source firmware, whether this was going to be something I'd have to constantly fiddle with. I downloaded DD-WRT, installed it, initially looked at some of the options it offered, and never had to go back. Bonus, it provides many more options than what came with the router (consumer router firmware is really dumbed down). Not that I ever needed the options...but I know they're there if I ever wanted to start toying with them.

Another bonus: If you ever do change routers, and the new one can also run the same firmware you're already familiar with...then there's no learning curve when it comes to setting it up.
