I guess the diode got hit by a fork of lightning. And congrats on diagnosing and fixing the problem!

Diagonsing, I am not too sure about looked for the burnt patch, see a componet that is white with black legs which has the designation D4. Replace diode with a 4001 plug in board, LCD comes alive! Joy, board is still getting a bit hotter than I would like. Also the board lives in a below ground cuppboard, not sure how lightning got to it?

A 4001 can handle quite a bit of current.
It is possible that the voltage regulator is on the fritz, and you are getting excessive voltage/current.
If this is the case, the 4001 may survive, but something else is likely to fry.
I've also seen similar failures when there is a shorted, incorrect, or reversed Zener diode in the voltage regulation circuitry.
Enjoy Level 2.
BTW, its been a long time since I did this kind of stuff, so take this with a pound of salt.

The reason I used a 4001, I had some. I don't think there is a Zener issue is the board is how do I put it, Questionable (bodged soldering, resistors tacked on wire links, hopefully it's version 1 of the board) in the places I have worked previously it would not have released, some how it has worked for close to nine years. Mind you testing it on the bench it seems to get VERY hot, getting to play with the Thermal Camera tomorrow. Seems like many things I have cured the result not the issue.

I have had multiple lightning hits.
One bolt hit a tree about 100ft from my house, found the copper DSL line in my yard and rode that into the modem. Thankfully the modem took the hit and saved the downstream network equipment. I have fiber optic cable now, so I hope that is future proofed from lightning.
Second hit was a bit of a mystery, but it traveled on the coax and burned out a TV and it also got the dishwasher. TV provided a path?

Lightning strikes are weird. The second one what happened 'probably' was the coax to the TV (I'm guessing CRT?), the Antenna socket was inductively coupled to the Earth, which I'm guessing the Kitchen was next to meaning same wiring spur got the zap up the wiring and as it was in standby the switch mode was not powered up meaning the Earth and Ground were not connected (being switch by the power supply) as white good for certifaction have to have earth points all over them the neutral and earth line will be seperated and a 'spark jumped' between earth and negative taking the easiest path, most likely the board traces. Splat. Lighting cool to watch, by make sure everything has a lighting protector (basically a couple MOVs) to take the hit. Sorry for the long answer I was thinking about it when I went to bed.
